Mr. & Mrs. Terelia. A check from the Execu tive Board for $500 was given to the couple. On April 11, 1988 former president of UNWLA, Stefania Pushkar died. Represent ing UNWLA at the funeral services were Maria Savchak, president and Iryna Czajkowskyj, press secretary. The Executive Board urged Regional Council presidents and individual branches to take an active part in their community celebrations and in Washington, D.C. com memorating 1000 years of Christianity in Ukraine. Members were also urged to raise funds to pay for billboards which would pro claim this anniversary. The Executive Board approved a $5,000 donation from UNWLA’s Medical Fund to help cover the cost of medical treatment for Marko Ruban. Chrystine Huk, member of branch 12 in Cleveland, Ohio was proclaimed winner in the competition sponsored by the UNWLA managed Eva Stashkiv Scholarship Fund. The award will help her to achieve her Ph.D. in Ukrainian studies at the Indiana University in Bloomfield, Indiana. The members of the committee manag ing the Lesia and Petro Kowaliv Fund were: Maria Savchak, president of UNWLA, Dr. Iwanna Ratych, Lidia Hladky, Iwanna Rozan- kowsky, Iryna Czajkowskyj. The committee announced a literary competition for a his torical narrative or a novel. The competition deadline — December 31, 1989. The jury judging the Lesia and Petro Kowaliw compe tition on historical themes, awarded three prizes: First prize $1,500 — Prof. Bohdan Kraw chenko, “Social Changes and National Con sciousness in XX Century Ukraine.” Second prize $1,000 — Prof. Franko Sysyn, ’’Between Poland and Ukraine — Dilemma of Adam Kysil.” Third prize $500 — Prof. Myroslava Mudrak-Cishkevych, ’’The New Generation and Artistic Modernism in Ukraine.” UNWLA took part in a committee com prised of impartial organizations concerned with uniting UCCA and OUC Council. Maria Savchak participated in several such meet ings in 1988 and it looked as if unity was in order. Unfortunately the efforts of the com mission did not come to fruition. Two members of the Executive Board were recipients of professional commenda tions. Dr. Iwanna Ratych, first vice president of UNWLA was honored by the West Ger man government for her work in the field of German American relations. Lidia Hladky, vice president for cultural affairs, was ho nored by the Archdiocese of Newark for her 27 year work in the library at Seton Hall University. The committee for OUR LIFE, with the following members: Iwanna Ratych chairman, Ulana Lubovych, Marta Danyluk, Iryna Czaj kowskyj and Maria Savchak met several times to resolve problems associated with the ma gazine. To help the editor in her work, Luba Gavur was hired for a trial period. The second meeting of the National Board was held on October 22 and 23, 1988. Honorary president Iwanna Rozankowsky prepared rules which would govern the meet ings of the National Board, the By-Laws Committiee and the Resolutions Committee. The rules were discussed and approved. A report concerning OUR LIFE was given by Ulana Lubowych and administrator of the magazine, Natalia Duma. It was emphasized that without a solid financial base, OUR LIFE cannot exist. It was decided that Regional Council reports be withheld from publication in OUR LIFE until the next Convention. Instead, in 1989 OUR LIFE will publish reports from Regional Councils’ general meetings and writing contributions from individual bran ches. It was also agreed that the XXII Conven tion of UNWLA will be held in May 1990 in Detroit, Michigan. On October 22, 1988 the winners of the competition of works on a historical theme sponsored by the Lesia and Petro Kowaliw Fund, received their awards. Following, Dr. Martha Bohachevsky-Chomiak was honored upon the publication of her book “Feminists Despite Themselves.” At the December 10, 1988 meeting of the Executive Board it was decided to purchase a copying machine for UNWLA’s office. It was also decided, at the initiative of welfare chairman Lidia Chernyk, to give $450 to defray medical costs for Olha Olena Bahrij from Brazil and $3,000 for support and med ical expenses for Hanusia Sverstiuk. The Executive Board named Maria To- morug its representative to the Convention committee of the XXII Convention. The edu cation chair of UNWLA, Olha Trytiak spoke about the arrangements of opening a day care center in a parish in Newark, New Jer sey. UNWLA agreed to fund the initial open ing expenses. 47 www.unwla.org
