organizations, as well as in international women’s organizations and participation in their congresses or conventions is impera tive. It is our window to the world. In order to see results, we must maintain this continui ty. We try to do this, but such activity involves heavy expenses which we can barely cover. Some members of the Executive Board (Dr. Ivanna Ratych, Olha Hnateyko, Maria Tomo- rug) took part in congresses or conventions at their own cost. We cannot always count on such good will. We are in dire need of a fund which would cover the costs of repre sentation, from which we could draw if need be. The third women’s conference “Ukrain ian Woman in Two Worlds” which was plan ned for the Fall of 1989 was not held, through no fault of our organization. It has been rescheduled for Fall of this year. The two previous conferences introduced the objec tives and work of UNWLA to the participants. This, the third scheduled conference has as its goal to bring young women into the membership fold of UNWLA. The magazine OUR LIFE is undergoing a crisis, not its first, after all. The editor of many years, Ulana Lubovych, has handed in her resignation, and will leave at the end of February, this year. For several months Iryna Chaban, who came here from Ukraine for medical treatment, helped Ms. Lubovych. The Executive Board will untill the time of the Convention, coordinate the timely appearance of each issue. The cost of publication has risen dram atically, hence the Executive Board was forced to suggest to the National Board that the subscription price be raised to $20 per year. The motion for the price increase was unanimously approved. Branches must have a 100% membership subscription as dictated by the By Laws, with no exceptions allowed. OUR LIFE is the only Ukrainian women’s magazine in the United States which has been published uninterrupted for 46 years. It must continue to exist. We have to apply all our ingenuity to insure its future, specifically now when Ukraine has a chance to spread its wings, when the Ukrainian woman can speak and write freely. One of the very important resolutions from previous Conventions which were up held by the XXI Convention, is that branches should offer financial support only to pro jects which are part of programs sanctioned by UNWLA, adhering to Convention resolu tions and subject to adoption by the National Board. The financial reconstruction of UN WLA is already in its 18th year. Much pro gress has been made in that time, yet reports from some branches still indicate that they support projects which are affiliated with the objectives of our organization. In ending the overview of the work of UNWLA for the last term of office, I must state that things went pretty smoothly, reports from branches were satisfactory, as were their responses to our letters. The cooperation between Regional Councils and the Execu tive Board was on a friendly basis and posi tive. We tried to do everything to keep the organization on an even keel. In comparison with other organizations, I am proud of ours. As I previously noted, UNWLA will mark its 65th year. This a serious age for any organization, indicates that it was founded on virtuous, wise and long lasting founda tions and that its work was directed toward the needs and the good of the Ukrainian community. However, we cannot live in the past nor revel in its accomplishments — we must grow, seek new paths, new ways to work better, for the strength of every organi zation is in its ideas and its people. 25 www.unwla.org
