company donated a large number of syringes and needles, another gave powdered milk and vitamins. In February 1990 all this was sent to Kiev and given to representatives of Rukh, to be distributed to those in need. For the XXII Convention, the Scholar ship Chairman of UNWLA, Anna Krawchuk, compiled a brochure which gives a detailed account of the work of her group. The Education Committee which is re sponsible for pre-school classes has started a new branch of activity — all day nursery school classes for Ukrainian children of working mothers. Education Chairman Olha Trytiak was the initiator of this project. The first such experiment met with great success. The first all day Ukrainian nursery school holds classes at the St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Newark, New Jersey. UNWLA, as the founder of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organiza tions, fully supports the Federation in all its endeavors. UNWLA was well represented at the WFUWO’s Congress, because due to the urging of the Executive Board, all presidents of Regional Councils were present. Acting as chairman of the proceedings was UNWLA’s Vice President Dr. Iwanna Ratych. The activ ities for the event were well prepared, thus greatly impressing the participants. Repre sentatives of UNWLA attend board meetings of WFUWO. The Executive Board asked branches to urge their members to subscribe to WFUWO’s quarterly Ukrainian Woman in the World. UNWLA’s magazine OUR LIFE carries a monthly news page about the work of WFUWO. UNWLA readily supports the World Con gress of Free Ukrainians. Delegates from UNWLA took an active part in the WCFU’s Congress. I, as President of UNWLA became a member of the Presidium of the Secretariat of the WCFU, assuming a chair as a repre sentative from WFUWO, thereby taking an active part in all the meetings called by the greater Presidium, which are held in Toronto, Canada at least four times a year. UNWLA took part in the May activity sponsored by WCFU, at which members raised about $8,000, which was sent to WCFU. Our cooperative efforts with American women’s organizations are proceeding satis factorily. UNWLA is a member of the National Council of Women in the United States. I, as President, am a member of their Board and take part in the meetings. Dr. Martha Bo- hachevsky-Chomiak was elected Vice Presi dent of the NCW, but in December 1989 she resigned for personal reasons. Member at Large of UNWLA’s Executive Board, Iryna Kurowyckyj is a member of the Executive Board of NCW and is on the International Hospitality Committee. In the summer of 1988 the International Council of Women held its Convention in Washington, D.C., to mark the 100th anni versary of its founding, as well as the found ing of the NCW of the U.S. UNWLA took an active part in these events. For the first time since UNWLA became a member of the NCW of U.S. it had three delegates to the Conven tion. To mark this Jubilee Convention UNWLA organized a reception for the delegates at the prestigious National Press Club. Over 400 invited guests attended the event, includ ing the leadership of both the International Council of Women and the National Council of Women of U.S., representatives of nu merous individuals, national councils of var ious foreign countries, as well as many noted women leaders. I received a certificate of commendation from the President of the NCW of U.S. in which the efforts of our organiza tion on behalf of this Convention are acknow ledged and applauded. In the Fall of that same year we received another commenda tion certificate from NCW, which praised our cooperative efforts, our moral and financial support of the American organization. The large attendence at UNWLA’s reception dur ing the Jubilee Convention, as well as the many letters of appreciation which we re ceived, does indicate that organized women have influence on events of historical pro portions. In June 1989 the General Federation of Women’s Clubs held its International Con vention in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which I attended and gave a report on the activities of our organization. In July of this year (1990) the GFWC will celebrate its 100th birthday. To mark this occasion, which will be celebrated in New York City, UNWLA will actively par ticipate in the proceedings and is planning to host a reception for international dele gates to the convention. Our organization is also a member of the National Women’s Party, headquartered in Washington, D.C. Vice President for Public Affairs, Dr. Martha Bohachevsky-Chomiak is an active participant in this influential organ ization. UNWLA’s membership in Ukrainian world 24 www.unwla.org
