BRANCH 116 — OLENA LOTOCKY — ERIE, PA. REGIONAL COUNCIL OHIO Organized in 1975, Branch 116 enables Ukrainian women of the Erie area to express, share, and preserve their common heritage. The active Ukrainian population is very small. Some members have grown up in this area while others have moved recently from larger Ukrainian communities. Our Ukrainian experience, interests, and expectations vary greatly, sometimes causing misunderstanding and disappointment. Yet we continue working together, determined to maintain a Ukrainian presence in Northwestern Pennsylvania. The Branch operates the Erie School of Ukrainian Studies and the dance group “Zolote Kolossya”. About twenty children ages 3 to 12 attend weekly classes which are conducted by mothers, some of whom are learning Ukrainian along with their children. The dance group performances always receive a hearty reception from our audiences, and the annual St. Nicho las visit is eagerly anticipated by all. To share our heritage with the Erie community the Branch annually participates in the International Ball and the Philharmonic Holiday Marketplace, dtcorates a Christmas tree for the Festival of Trees, conducts pysanky workshops, and sets up special exhibits in the public library window. In 1988 the Branch focused its energy on the celebration of the Millennium. Combining efforts with Rev. Julius Kubinyj (SS Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church) and our hus bands, we formed the ’’Erie Committee to Commemorate the Millennium of Christianity in Ukraine”. The highlight of the year was a solemn Ukrainian Divine Liturgy concelebrated by six priests on Sunday, September 11th in St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Cathedral in Erie. The cele bration was enhanced by a procession of school children and Vatra Ukrainian Dancers, and by the beautiful singing of the church choir from Pokrova Ukrainian Church in Parma, OH. The 1000 people who attended were awed by the majesty of our Ukrainian Rite. At a dinner in honor of the clergy and chorus, the Vatra Dancers, from Brampton, Ontario, delighted all with dances from different regions of Ukraine. Press and media coverage before and after our commemora tion was extensive and informative. In 1989 the Branch received a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts for three apprentices to study the ”nyz” embroidery technique under the guidance of master Nadia Wolynec. Branch members also attended classes on the making of ’’gerdany”, which were con ducted by Anna Halamay. The members of Branch 116 greet all members of UNWLA and extend Best Wishes for a very successful XXII Convention. Daria McKay president ПРИВІТ XXII КОНВЕНЦІЇ СУА Ірина О.
