The only active Ukrainian organization in the Erie area, the 19-member Soyuz Ukrainok Branch 116 is the glue that binds the Ukrainian community of Erie. Besides holding branch meetings, our group organizes special events for our families and the Ukrainian community, participates in international activities and festivals, prepares exhibits of Ukrainian art and culture, and spon sors the Ukrainian School and Dance Group. A very special event in October, 1984, which raised $1000 for the Ukrainian Museum, was a Benefit Banquet prepared by the Restaurant Management class of Mercyhurst College. A slide presentation by Dr. Bohdan Cymbalisty, a performance by “Kashtan” dance group from Cleve land, a Chinese Auction of Ukrainian artifacts, and pysanky table-prizes contributed to making this a memorable evening for many gueast from the Erie area. In November, 1985 the Ukrainian community gathered for a farewell dinner in honor of the Irene Swystun, co-founder and former president of our Branch. This occasion also marked the 10th Aniversary of Branch 116. We regularly send packages of clothing to Europe and South America, and frequently support the UNWLA scholarship fund. Our main annual found-raiser is the International Holi day Marketplace of the Erie Philharmonic. It gives us an opportunity to sell Ukrainian crafts, literature and food, and to show off our Dance Group. Many “regulars" seek out our booth each year. For several years Ukrainian Easter and Christmas traditions have been featured as displays in the library window at the Millcreek Mall. Our pysanky were on display at the Erie Art Museum. A permanent collection depicting the history of the Erie Ukrainian community is being assembled in the Mercyhurst College Archives. The Ukrainian School, directed by Branch members, boasts 25 students ranging from 3 to 18 years old. The dance group “Zolote Kolossya", directed by Mary Swonder and Anya McKay, has 30 members. A number of our dancers participated in the summer dance workshops direc ted by Roma Pryjma-Bohachevsky. The annual St. Nicholas Visit and other special events and performances give the students a chance to present what they have learned. Besides teaching the children our language and traditions, the school activities give our youth a sense of belon ging to a Ukrainian community. The members of Branch 116 are proud to be a part of UNWLA and extend their Best Wishes for a very successful XXI Convention. Larrissa Shpon Daria McKay president secretary 165 www.unwla.org
