that were members of the Federation and so through this media word was spread about Ukrain ians, their culture and heritage. Individual clubs of the Federation invited us to speak to them about Ukrainians. Sometimes arrangements were made with the late Mother M. Zenobia OSBM, Superior of St. Basil’s Orphanage to permit children in Ukrainian attire perform either by song or dance at some of these functions. In those days, newspapers gave us good publicity since the Branch received many awards in their participation in exhibits of arts and crafts either displaying them at center city banks, libraries or at the headquarters of The Federation which was located in downtown Gimbels. By soliciting funds for the Red Cross and doing volunteer work, citations, received for our efforts as a Ukrainian group also gave us publicity. Then too, when need came to organize the Regional Council of the UNWLA, the Branch members solicited funds and participated in the program as well as when the United Ukrainian American Relief Committee was founded, the Branch supported it wholeheartedly in volunteer ing their time for the collection and packing of clothing to be sent to the displaced persons in Germany and Austria. With the decision of the UNWLA to print the newspaper “Our Life” funds were donated for this worthy cause for as the organization was growing, there was need of dissemination of thoughts and ideas of the Branches throughout the U.S. On May 24, 1940, the Branch had a delegate attend the first meeting of the Ukrainian Con gress Committee of America, Inc. which was held in Washington, D.C. The delegate paid her own expenses for this event. It was important to have as many Branches represented as possi ble so that the UNWLA would have their representative elected to the Executive Committee so the women’s organization would have voting rights. The Branch has been and continues to be a member of The Federation since 1941. Ste phanie Wochok, a charter member of the branch served as Secretary of the Juniors 1944-46 and then as President of The Federation 1972-74 and was again elected to serve in that capacity 1986-1988. Members participate in their various programs. For the past eight years, the Branch has donated baskets of food prior to the Christmas Holidays to the Missionary Sisters of Mother of God and for the past four years has prepared and served the traditional twelve course meal “Prosfora” held at the Annunciation B.V.M. Parish in Melrose Park, Pa. The meetings are held at their Church Hall as well the Branch’s 40th and 45th anniversary celebrations. The Golden Anniversary will be held also at this location. Fund raisers were annual weekend Bazaars where many hand made items, embroideries and baked goods were sold, Card Parties were held and Dances at the Ukrainian Hall. The members even arranged a Minstral Show with costumes and appropriate music and performed to a capacity crowd. During the 50 years, profits derived were donated, in addition to the above mentioned organizations to St. Basil’s Orphanage, St. Basil’s Academy, Manor Junior College, Ukrainians in Jugoslavia, at time of the earthquake, Church in Need in Chaco, Argentina and Ukrainian Museum in New York City. Throughout the 50 years, the Branch has been a very closely knit group, sympathetic to each other’s needs and eventhough some members do not speak the Ukrainian language flu ently are well aware and are proud of their heritage and traditions and continue to share them with others. We’re taking this opportunity to send our hearty Congratulations and Best Wishes to our Parent Organization, Ukrainian National Wo men’s League of America, for a successful forthcoming convention that will be held in Cleveland, Ohio in May 1987. May your deliberations be fruitful! Stephanie Wochok 111 www.unwla.org
