In 1981 Branch 117 was named in honor of Julia Shustakevich, first president of UNWLA. All aspects of Ukrainian cultural heritage have been studied with programs pres ented by members and guests. Topics have included: Ukrainian clothing and embroidery; Ukrainian history to the 17th century; Symbols, emblems and heraldry during the 17th century Hetman era; Ten centuries of Ukrainian literature; Tribal divisions and ethnogra phic groups in 9th century Ukraine; Ukrainian geography; Ukrainian civilization; History from Hetman Ivan Mazepa to World War I; History of the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church; Ukrainian Christmas customs; Ukrainian state and liberation struggle from 1917- 1921; Ukrainian Easter eggs — film, demonstration and workshop; A comparison of the Finnish and Ukrainian independence movements; The Ukrainian Holocaust; Report on the observance of the 50th anniversary of the Ukrainian famine in Washington D.C.; Racial composition of the Ukrainian people; The Ukrainian dissident movement; Taras Shev chenko. The branch participated in community multi-ethnic events and supported Washington Ukrainian Club activities. Social events included dances, picnics and Christmas parties. 220 www.unwla.org
