83 ГОЛОВНА УПРАВА samples of the different embroidery stitches. All of the exhibitions incited a great excitement in both the Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian public, but mainly among the Ukrainian youth, who enthusiastically expressed an interst in learning even the more complicated stitches and in expanding their knowledge of folk art. Many favorable reviews of this exhibition hav appeared in the press. PUBLICATIONS Every exhibition had with it a companion catalogue. In conjunction with the inaugural exhibition an illustrated catalogue in both Ukrainian and English with a complete description of each item was published. The catalogues of the second exhibition were published separately in Ukrainian and English and contained articles about pysanky, ritual breads and were also illustrated. The catalogue corresponding to the third exhibition is a very large and all-encompassing one, also published separately in both languages. It contains articles about Ukrainian embroidery.weaving.folk costumes and an exact and very technical description of every exhibited article. The English catalogue also contains information about the different embroidery stitches. As were the previous ones, this catalogue is also widely illustrated with voth photos and sketches. Besides the catalogues, an album of postcards ’’Ukrainian ceramics,” an informative brochure about the Ukrainian museum and postcards with pysanky, all in two languages, have also been published. All of the items exhibited in the museum have been photographed and have been compiled into sets of slides, which are available either for sale or loan: ritual breads (71 slides) and pysanky (80 slides). Both are available with a Ukrainian and English text to assist those interested in their presentation. PROGRAMS As has been previously mentioned, a very important function of the museum are its educational programs. From its very first days, the Ukrainian museum has devoted much attention to this category and has, so far, sponsored two Easter and one Christmas program. The first Easter program took place in March and April 1977 (10 sessions) and consisted of classes in pysanky decoration and lectures about ritual breads and pysanky. The program was executed in two languages. There was also a separate program for children (4 sessions) which included a puppet show and pysanky classes. The second Easter program was in March and April 1978 (18 sessions: 8 adult, 10 youth). This program was made up of classes in pysanky making, lectures about pysanky and a showing of two films about pysanky. The Christmas program took place in December 1977 and was made up of 11 sessions for the young. The program encompassed practical demonstrations of making Christmas decortions in the Ukrainian style, a short lecture on Christmas traditions nad Ukrainian carols and the performance of a singing group which sang a series of ancient carols. A traditional creche ’’vertep” and Christmas supper table with the 12 courses were exhibited; a Christmas tree was decorated with all of the hand made ornaments. Over 600 youngsters took part in the program. After ecah session, one could see that the children were leaving with a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. The teachers claimed that one session at the museum did more for the children than even ten classes in school ever could. At the present, the Ukrainian Museum is in the process of preparing further educaional programs: courses in embroidery, monthly lectures on different branches of Ukrainian art as well as continuing Easter and Christmas programs. www.unwla.org
