81 THE UKRAINIAN MUSEUM IN NEW YORK ГОЛОВНА УПРАВА INTRODUCTION Behind us we already have a three year period which began during the Jubilee year of the UNWLA. If we were to choose the apex of this period, there is no doubt that it would be the opening of the Ukrainian Museum in New York. The UNWLA had begun acquiring its own collection of Ukrainian arts and crafts in its very first years of existence. Such a collection was first put together in 1933 and it was a pride and joy for many years, exhibited in many cities and for many occasions, for both the Ukrainian and American public. The collection, after 43 years of wandering, became a real museum, and the gala opening was held on the October 2nd and 3rd in 1976. This event was the result of much hard work on the part of the UNWLA and the museum is located in the building owned by the UNWLA. Today the Ukrainian Museum can boast of 1-1/2 years of existence. In order to better appreciate the work and achievements of the Ukrainian Museum, we should first examine what a museum is and what its goals and assignments are. THE GOALS OF A MUSEUM Museums are scientific institutions which gather, preserve, teach and exhibit articles of historical, educational, cultural and artistic value. It is because of museums that cultural valuables are saved from extinction. Museums also have a sociological function: the are to serve humanity and to be educational and cultural centers. Most of the goals of a museum are fulfilled via exhibits. Cultural valuables both of the past and the present are partaken of through the sense of sight. Today’s exhibits in museums are very different from those of yesterday, which were unchangeable, immovable exhibitions of all that the museum had ever acquired. Contemporary museums mostly exhibit articles thematically. Each one is prepared to illustrate some form of unity, change or growth in art, history, education and the like. Frequently exhibits familiarize the viewer with something new or not well known. The goal of each exhibit is to focus the viewer’s attention to create a complete picture of some historical era, artistic style, culture of some nation, tribe, etc. As educational centers, museums have markedly expanded their activities for the good of the public and especially the youth and children. Not only does one go to museum to view an exhibit, but also to hear a lecture, concert, take some courses and lessons. Very frequently, museums prepare programs under the guidance of teachers and schools in order to expand the visual conception of history, culture, etc. This is one the best ways of awakening a child’s interest and often leads to the discovery of some hidden talent or skill. Museums serve a very important national role. The visitor acquires knowlegde about the given nation, about its grandeur since the museum also cultivates respect for the culture and awakens feelings of patriotism. It is no wonder that when an agressive nation tries to destroy another the first thing it destroys historical documents and museum artifacts. The Ukrainian nation, bouncing back and forth from the hands of one occupant into those of another, has greatly suffered from the destruction of its cultural valuables. How many churches and archives have been burned! How many monuments destroyed! Is it possible to even account for them all? How many of those who were devoted to art and museums have been incarcerated and destroyed both physically and psychologically? If certain artifacts are not very national in character, e. g., the Scythian exhibit, then the occupying nation exhibits it in its own museum as well as in museums throughout the world, proudly claiming it as his own. www.unwla.org
