Ukrainian people. In 1940 the Ukrainian Congress Committee was formed in wasnington as a permanent socio-political body rerpresentative of Ukrainians in America. The UNWLA, through the numerous participation of its members in the proceedings, emerged as one of the co founders of the new institution. The end of World War Two brought a surge of relief aid from America to the destitute victims of the holocaust in Europe.UNWLA, first in independent committees, the in cooperation with the United Ukrainian-American Relief Committee and the American Red Cross contributed tremendous efforts to the cause; On the organizational level UNWLA took great stridesforward with its acceptance into the membership of the General Federation of Women's Organizations a very powerful and influential association in America. It was emhasized at their 1949 convention that UNWLA is the first ethnic women’s organization allowed to join their ranks. In 1952 UNWLA became a member of the National Council of American Women. This membership opened the door for participation in congresses of International Affiliation of Women, thereby creating channels of cooperation and understanding with women’s organizations of other nations. The entrance of young women into the rank and file membership of the UNWLA, saw the founding of 12 new branches of the organization. At the 1945 convention the young members demanded a program which would emphasize the preservation of Ukrainian culture and the rearing of children in the spirit of our religious and national heritage. The Convention also saw the birth of a scholarship fund to aid qualified students of music, medicine and journalism. In 1948 through the efforts of UNWLA a World Congress of Ukrainian women convened in Philadelphia. Representatives of women's organizations in Canada and a delegation of the Federation of Ukrainian Women of Germany took part in the sessions along with UNWLA delegation. Many organizations which could not send representatives voiced their support in writing. The resolutions of the Congress underlined the fact that organizational efforts of Ukrainian women in the Ukraina have beeen wiped out. In order to preserve our national identity for the future generations, Ukrainian women in the free world should intensify their organiza tional activities, nurture our spiritual heritage and become a veritable, bountiful source of informations to the world at large about the plight of the Ukrainian nation. A very significant outcome of the resolutions was the founding of the World Federations Of Ukrainian Women's Organizations. One of the most rewarding projects undertaken by UNWLA was the maintenance and running of nursery schools. Initiated in 1953 by Cleveland Branch 33, this undertaking very soon became a major endeavor for the entire organization. In order to conduct these pre-school sessions with maximum benefit for the children, UNWLA offered educational courses for prospective teachers, supervised the publication of several guidance handbooks and gave financial support to branches sponsoring a nursery school. Throughout the years UNWLA has dilligently been involved in collecting a sizable representation of Ukrainain folk art. Since 1926 the organization has sponsored numerous exhibits featuring costumes from different regions of the Ukraine, wood carvings, ceramics, embroidery and "pysanky". In 1967 UNWLA house its invaluable collection at the Ukrainian Institute of America, hoping thereby by establish a permanent museum, open to the public. However, due to various circumstances the exponents had to be removed and are now held in Philadelphia. The problems of social welfare have been delt by UNWLA with decisive action. In the course of the years, the organization has excelled its efforts to aid those in need with such programs as "Mother and Child”, the relocation of war widows during and after World War Two, and "The Grandmother Fund" which gives moral and financial support to elderly Ukrainian women in all parts of the world. In the United States the need arose to help our senior citizens whose meager knowledge of the English language created all sorts of handicaps. Several Regional Councils created, in answer to this problem, Bureaus of Social Welfare. UNWLA has also invested an enormous amount of effort in the field of education. The support of Ukrainian schools in Belgium www.unwla.org
