Thoughtful members came up with donations of 210 volumes for "Books For Prisoners”, and we have supplied Parma, Lakewood, and Brecksville, Ohio, with copies of the Ukrainian Arts book, Encyclopedias of Ukraine, Ukrainian history books and Ukrainian cook books. We also support the Chair of Ukrainian Studies at Harvard University. To raise money, the club has held Annual Spring Dances that have always been successful, with members (a very talented group) providing entertainment. Our card parties and dinners have been sellouts, too. We take part annually in the "All Nations Fair", with members baking Ukrainian pastries and foods and helping out all day at the booth dressed in Ukrainian costumes. We also hold Christmas Bazaars at the various churches; all handicrafts are prepared by the members. Workshops have been held to teach Ukrainian embroidery, candle-making, Ukrainian cooking and baking, papier-mache angels, and pine cone wreaths. In March of 1968, we held a four-week instruction course in how-to-make Ukrainian pysanky, which was free to the public. We wanted to introduce Ukrainian art — and what a suprise we had with over 150 people attending. The following year we held pysanka-decorating demonstrations at Sears (a donation from Sears went to the club treasury). Since then we have held lectures on this subject at various libraries and churches and for civic groups and club meetings throughout Cuyahoga County. One of our members gave a demonstration on a local TV program. In addition, we took part in a Historical Costume Pageant on TV and on stage. In the Spring of 1972 our branch sponsored a month-long Fine Arts Display in a Parma Public Library. Among Ukrainian artists who loaned us their original paintings, sculpture, ceramics, and enamels were L. Hutsaliuk, S. Gerulak, G. Kruk, E. Kozak and M. Czereshniovsky. In 1973 our group hosted a UNWLA Conference (Ukrainian-American Women) with Mrs. Anastasia Volker, national organization chairman, as guest speaker, and vice president Alexandra Riznyk. The conference, an inspiration to all of us, was greatly enjoyed. Our traditional Christmas Eve Holy Day (Svyata Vechera) is observed by all members togetherwith husbandsand guest Each member preparesfoodforthisannual affair, taking her turn in making a different dish each year. In this way, everyone has the opportunity to cook a typical Ukrainian dish without assistance; eventually each member well have prepared all the traditional foods partaken at this meal. The traditional recipes are handed down from generation to generation, chiefly by word of mouth. A prayer is recited and the traditional "Kutya" is passed around to each person. One of the group leads in the singing of carols immediately following this Holy Supper, which usually continues until everyone is ready to go home. We are proud to say we have celebrated our 25th Anniversary and are working towards another twenty-five years of activity. PAST PRESIDENTS 1. Helen Mural Shipka 1946-1949 2.
