XVII КОНВЕНЦІЯ СУА 136 37 BR. DETROIT, MICH. Seated, L. to R.: M. Krafton-Treas., M. Slaby-Pres., S. Small - Sec. Standing: D. Demray, A. Strokon, S. Fedyk-C. Sec., A. Volker-V. Pres., J. Borden, K. Zojac. Absent: E. Austin, E. Fortune, M. Fortune, O. Shuster, A. Skula, A. Stechison. BRANCH 37 — LESIA UKRAINKA — DETROIT, MICHIGAN Branch 37 was organized on December 29, 1937 In Detroit, Michigan. It has pursued an American-Ukrainian community service program of an educational, cultural, and civic nature. Besides fulfilling the aims of the UNWLA, the study of Lesia Ukrainka (whose name it bears) is part of its program. In the late 1930's, funds were given toward the purchase and restoration of Lesia Ukrainka's birthplace and for the translation of her works into English. Copies of the Spirit of Flame were presented to the Detroit Public Libraries by the Branch. The activities of Branch 37 include lectures, leadership training workshops, plays, folk-art exhibits, fashion shows, musical programs, cross-stitch classes, "pysanky" workshops, Ukrainian cookery, and knitting afghans for hospital patients and senior citizens. Earlier, the Branch participated in War Bond Drives, and in Red Cross work during World War II; today, it helps VISTA. Being bi-lingual, the Branch's major thrust has been to share the Ukrainian culture with the American community by working with the International Institute in the International Village exhibits, the 250th Detroit Birthday celebration, the annual Old World Markets, the Freedom Festivals, the annual Detroit Ethnic Festivals, and American Women's organizations. Fund-raising projects have enabled Branch 37 to contribute to women's publications, students in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Relief Committee Fund, annual Community Fund drives, Ukrainian parochial schools and churches, UNWLA Scholarship Fund, Ukrainian National Temple, UNWLA Detroit Regional Council's Building Fund for Senior Citizens, UNWLA Museum, and to send packages to servicemen, displaced persons and Ukrainians in Europe and South America. www.unwla.org
