Within the past three years, dissidents Nadia Svitlychna with her sons Jarema and Ivan, Valentyn Moroz, later joined by his wife Raissa and son Valentyn, and Sviatoslav and Nina Karavansky were released by the USSR. Funds were established for Svitlychna and Moroz. Monies collected were later handed over to said dissidents and their families. Moreover, the National Executive Board met and held discussions with most of the dissidents. In November of 1978, Leonid Pliusch, General Petro Hryhorenko and Nadia Svitlychna participated in a meeting with the community held in UNWLA quarters. Funds were also awarded to Professor Vera Wowk for the publication of her Anthology of Ukrainian Literature and her Portuguese translation of several Ukrainian works. Furthermore, a brochure dealing with the International Year of the Child was issued and distributed to all English-speaking countries and at the International Council of Wome in Nairobi, Kenya. Other publications included the updated UNWLA history in the Ukrainian and English language, embroidery album of Sokalsky region, a culinary glossary and a new UNWLA brochure. Communications included a congratulatory telegram to Pope Paul II, a telegram of support of the Olympic boycott and of prayer for the release of the hostages to President Carter and the forwarding of WCFU documents about the de-colonization of the USSR to the International Council of Women in France, the National Council of Women and to the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. Furthermore, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs’ upon sponsoring an exihibit by the Soviet Women’s Committee received background information about said committee. Contact was established with and information was disseminated to Natalka Sliusar, assistant to the Director of the Ethnic Bureau during Carter’s administration in Washington, D. C. In November of 1978, a UNWLA delegation visited Bishop Losten and presented him with an antique chasuble. In December of 1980, Bishop Losten visited UNWLA headquarters and the Ukrainian Museum. There he was honored at a luncheon sponsored by the UNWLA National Executive Board and Dr. Bohdan Cymbalisty, president of the museum. The Museum remains under the protectorate of UNWLA. The sale of Ukrainian Christmas cards drafted by Ukrainian artists and a successful lottery provided partial funding for the Museum. Furthermore, recruitment of museum members from UNWLA ranks as well as from the 35 www.unwla.org
