REPORT OF THE SECRETARIAT The XVIII UNWLA Convention was held in June of 1978 in New York. The Slogan was “Today’s Ukrainian child — the future of the Ukrainian nation”. The Convention elected Ivanna Rozankowsky to her second term as president. Other National Executive Board members elected were: Vice Presidents — Aleksandra Riznyk, Lubov Wolynetz, Chrystyna Nawrocky and Olha Stawnychy (who upon resigning in June of 1978 was replaced by Maria Tomorug); recording secretary — Irene Czajkowsky; corresponding secretary — Maria Savchak; treasurer — Aleksandra Kirshak; financial secretary — Ivanna Ratych; and members- at-large — Olha Hnateyko and Maria Tomorug. Chairwomen in charge of the following standing committees of the National Board were elected as follows: Iryna Kindrachuk (organizational); Daria Markus (culture); Irene Russnak (museum and arts); Irene Lonchyna (education); Theodosia Sawycky (social welfare); Irene Kachaniwsky (scholarship); Olena Prociuk (press); Marta Terlecky (public relations) and Louisa Saks (by-laws). The new National Auditing Committee includes Olha Mussakovsky, president for her second term, Pola Knysh and Nadia Popel, members and Eugenia Nowakivsky and Oksana Mykytyn, alternates. During its term, the National Executive Board met twice monthly. Matters on the agenda were the goals and aims of the administration, budgetary concerns, reviews of accomplishments, maintenance of UNWLA’s prominent position in the community, and just recently, preparation for the XIX Convention. Specifically, aims of the administration included: collection of pictures of Ukrainian immigrants in the United States dating as far back as 1890, registration of Ukrainian folk art, continued support of the Ukrainian Museum, aid to Ukrainian political prisoners and their families and recruitment of UNWLA members-at-large in the various regions. Two conferences held with the presidents of the regional councils reinforced these aims and established a point system for the evaluation of each branch — with the most distinguished branches to be noted at the XIX Convention. Furthermore, members of the Board participated in all Regional conferences encouraging the branches to achieve the above-stated goals. The National Board met in October of 1978, October of 1979 and November of 1980. Plans for action were discussed, approved and implemented. Reports, lectures and panels were given. Resolutions and statutory changes were submitted for adoption by the Convention. One important lecture was “UNWLA” — a federation of women’s clubs or a national organization with common goals and objectives” given by Ivanna Rozankovsky. Other important activities meriting mention were the rendering of a decision on bequest, in that the National Board would have the disposition of the monies donated in understanding with the Branch to which the bequest was made; the announcement of a contest in “Our Life”, magazine, for the best historical works awarded by the Literary Fund established by Lesia and Peter Kowaliw and the best stories for children awarded,by the UNWLA Education Committee, resulting in three awarded works in the latter category; the commencement of the collection of materials concerning the famine in Ukraine in the 1930’s in preparation for the upcoming 50th anniversary and the approval of the projected UNWLA flag. In June of 1978, the International Council of Women celebrated its 90th anniversary in Oslo, Norway. Ivanna Rozankovsky took part in the proceedings with the primary purpose of reminding the council that UNWLA was already accepted as a member by the council in 1920. Proper documentation in support of the claim was submitted. Contact was also established with the Norwegian group of Amnesty International, which accepted the care of four Ukrainian women political prisoners. In June of 1978, the convention of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs held in Phoenix, Arizona was attended by Chrystyna Nawrocky. In November of 1978, UNWLA was in attendance at the 3rd World Congress of Free Ukrainians (WCFU) held in New York City. At the Congress, Ivanna Rozankovsky was elected to the Secretariat, Theodosia Sawycky was delegated to the World Council of Social Services 33 www.unwla.org
