НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ • Травень-Червень 2025 7 Language barriers, while a challenge, can be ad - dressed through high-quality translations, subti - tled films, and multilingual cultural programming. Successful cultural diplomacy means ensuring that Ukrainian art, literature, and history are ac - cessible, relatable, and recognized in their own right — not as footnotes to russian culture. Competing in a Culturally Saturated World In major cultural hubs, where global narratives compete for attention, Ukraine must carve out a space that resonates with diverse audiences. Insti - tutional partnerships are key — whether through film festivals, museum exhibitions, or university programs, collaborating with well-established in - stitutions lends credibility and extends reach. The assumption that international interest in Ukraine remains as high as in the early years of the full-scale invasion is misleading. Today, Ukraine competes in a global marketplace of ideas, where attention spans are limited, and new crises con - stantly emerge. Strategic, well-planned initiatives are essential to maintain and expand Ukraine’s presence in global discourse. Key Initiatives and Strategies To reinforce Ukraine’s presence in global ac - ademia and cultural institutions, the UNWLA’s Decolonization Month promotes a range of initi - atives, including: • Expanding Ukraine’s Cultural Presence. De - veloping thematic projects that connect with international audiences. Examples include joint Ukrainian-American artistic projects addressing environmental issues, human rights, women’s contributions to history, or children’s rights. A particularly pressing topic is the return of Ukraini - an children illegally deported by russia. • Institutional Collaborations. Partnering with museums, universities, and cultural organizations to amplify Ukraine’s voice. • Decolonization Guides for Museums, Librar - ies, and Universities. Providing resources to help institutions reassess and correct the representa - tion of Ukrainian culture and history, which have long been misattributed, overshadowed, or ap - propriated. • Documentary Film Support. Financing and promoting films that capture Ukraine’s experi - ence and resilience during the war. • Decolonization of Ukrainian Studies in Glob - al Discourse. Strengthening academic programs dedicated to Ukrainian history, culture, and lit - erature to counter colonial narratives and secure Ukraine’s rightful place in global scholarship. Decolonization Month: A Long-Term Commit - ment The UNWLA’s Decolonization Month is not just a symbolic initiative — it’s a structured, long- term effort to shift the narrative around Ukraine’s cultural and historical identity. By strengthening partnerships with international institutions, pro - moting academic and artistic collaborations, and ensuring Ukraine’s voice is heard in cultural and intellectual spaces, this initiative helps position Ukraine as an equal participant in global conver - sations. The fight for cultural recognition is as criti - cal as any other aspect of Ukraine’s struggle for sovereignty. By engaging in cultural diplomacy, advocating for decolonized education, and fos - tering international partnerships, we ensure that Ukraine’s history and identity are no longer de - fined by others — but by Ukrainians themselves.
