НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ • Січень-Лютий 2025 39 OUR HEALTH Ihor Magun, MD, FACP The Greek philosopher Aristotle studied and worked on the sci - ence of happiness, which was referred to as “eudaimonia.” There are many different ways to translate this term into English, but it is a combination of the prefix “eu” (meaning “well”) and “daimon” (meaning “spirit”). In essence, the word means living a life that is focused on things in - trinsically important for human well-being, which brings us all happiness. Experts in more recent times have studied happiness exten - sively, and their conclusions are, in fact, surprising. One interest - ing question related to this sub - ject is why some people are hap - py even in the face of adversity and are even happier than others regardless of their circumstanc - es? One answer to this question is that, despite what we may think, only 10% of our happiness comes from our life circumstanc - What Makes Us Happy es. This includes home life and work and obviously excludes sit - uations of extreme poverty and major catastrophes. Fully 50% of happiness is genetically deter - mined, which means you may not be able to do much about it. The remaining 40% is attributed to behavior. This article focuses on that 40% and what we can do to maximize this percentage and be happier. Our relationships have a pow - erful influence on our happiness. Close relationships, in fact, make us happier than fame or money. But it is important to note that no relationship is perfect. What mat - ters most is that one can count on another person when times are difficult. Bonds and conversations with family and friends as well as people in your community con - tribute to happiness. A conscious focus on blessings has both emotional and inter - personal benefits. It is important to note that a relationship with others is a two-way street. Share three good things that happen each day with a friend or your partner and make it a habit to go out of your way to show grati - tude to others. Physical health also signifi - cantly affects our happiness. Everyone needs to maximize all the aspects of physical well-be - ing that are important, especially adequate sleep, exercise, nutri - tion, and addressing any medical issues one may have. It is also important to engage in fulfilling activities that align with personal values and strengths. Volunteer - ing is an excellent example. A final suggestion is that you live life in the moment and make your interactions with others matter. Listen carefully to an - other’s point of view, do what you believe in, and use the best in yourself and seek to learn or gain insight into something that gives you personal happiness. Happiness varies from person to person, but focusing on some of these suggestions can maximize the 40% to achieve the happi - ness that we so desire.
