НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ • Січень-Лютий 2025 29 Branch 88 (Philadelphia) Celebrates Its Vertep at Glencairn Museum Petrusia Sawchak , Press Secretary, Branch 88, Philadelphia, PA On December 11, a group of members from Branch 88 in Philadelphia visited the Glencairn Museum, a castle-like mansion in Bryn Athyn, PA, noted for its exquisite architecture, to view the museum’s annu - al Exhibition of World Nativities, which was on view from November 29 through January 26. This year, thanks to the efforts of our Soyuzianka Zenia Brozy - na, our Vertep was added to the three-dimensional Nativity scenes. The Ukrainian-themed Nativity scene was created and crafted by Branch 88 member Luba Chornodol - sky and her husband Andrij, and the traditional Hut - sul attire for the figures was crafted by Lydia Dychda - la, also a Branch 88 member for many years. According to Andrij, “The reenactment of the birth of Christ is found in the traditions of Ukraine going back to the earliest times after the Christianization of Ukraine in 988. The original Christmas-related rit - uals were all based on the winter solstice practices of paganism. Religious songs were intertwined with past pagan songs. There was the practice of caroling and storytelling relating to the birth of Christ. Animal costumes were part of the caroling group in rever - ence to the importance of animals in people’s lives. When Jesus was born, animals were also present.” The Chornodolskys also presented a unique diora - ma exhibition of Ukrainian Folktales and Traditions for Children on the campus of St. Basil the Great in Jenkintown this past fall. Branch 88 members, led by president Donna Silets- ky, enjoy their many activities to support and share our beautiful Ukrainian culture and traditions with the community.
