20 OUR LIFE • January-February 2025 THE UKRAINIAN MUSEUM 222E6NYC Ange Leccia: Ghosts of War February 7 – April 27, 2025 The Ukrainian Museum exhibition Ghosts of War features the renowned French artist and film - maker Ange Leccia’s exploration of war through his poetic video art. Known for his innovative use of light, time, and space, Leccia captures the fragility and cyclical nature of life, often reflecting on conflict and its societal impacts. The centerpiece of this exhibition is a newly commissioned film documenting the ongoing war in Ukraine. Ange Leccia, a prominent figure in contemporary video art and instal - lation art, has consistently engaged with themes of memory, place, and the interplay between time and perception. His work often challenges viewers to confront the complexities of visual representa - tion, questioning the ways in which images shape our understanding of reality. In the context of the ongo - ing war in Ukraine, Leccia’s oeuvre can be reframed to address the profound ramifications of conflict on collective memory and national identity. Leccia’s video installations fre - quently use layered imagery and soundscapes to evoke an emotion - al response, immersing the viewer in a sensory experience that tran - scends traditional narrative forms. This method aligns with the current conflict in Ukraine, where the vis - ualization of war transcends mere documentation, becoming a con - duit through which the human ex - perience is explored. As cities face destruction and cultural heritage is threatened, Leccia’s work reso - nates with the urgent need to ar - chive memory in a society fraught with instability.
