10 OUR LIFE • January-February 2025 Celebrating the UNWLA’s Centennial Marianna Zajac , Honorary President, UNWLA In 1950, Yulia Shushstakevych (Julia Shustakewich), the first president of the Ukrainian National Wom - en's League of America, wrote on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the UNWLA: “It wasn’t easy for the founders of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America to establish a women's organiza - tion. None of us had the appropriate preparation, but it is clear that these eight women who gath - ered for the first initial meeting on March 12, 1925, and laid the foundation for this organization, had a ‘lucky hand’ and that God had blessed their plans.” She added: “However, there were indications that Ukrainian women in America wanted to unite, want - ed to come together, and wanted to gain an under - standing of each other. This organization of Ukrain - ian women in America was a natural progression.” This centennial anniversary of the UNWLA is a celebration of these visionary founders and the rich history of the organization they founded. It also demonstrates the founding principle of empowering Ukrainian women by providing them a platform for leadership, education, and community service. The centennial anniversary celebrates the role women have played in shaping both the organization and the broader Ukrainian American community. The UNWLA’s Centennial Planning Committee is excited to share its plans for 2025: UNWLA history book.
