A Century of Compassion and Care: 100 Years of UNWLA Humanitarian Aid and Social Welfare Initiatives For the past 100 years, the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America has been a devoted provider of humanitarian aid and a tireless sup - porter of social welfare initiatives for Ukraine. From its beginnings, our organization has played a pivotal role in providing assistance and offering un - wavering support during times of crisis. From help - ing orphans, the elderly, and war victims to aiding refugees and displaced families, the UNWLA has Elizabeth Buniak , UNWLA National Social Welfare Chair (Branch 75, Maplewood, NJ) 8 OUR LIFE • August 2025 never hesitated to step in when Ukrainian commu - nities have needed it most. Highlighted here are only some of the significant milestones, projects, and events that have helped shape the UNWLA’s stellar legacy to this day. 1925–1945: Early Aid – Answering the Call During Crisis In 1932–1933 the UNWLA was instrumental in sending aid to those suffering from one of the most devastating tragedies in Ukraine’s history — genocide, the Holodomor. We were the first to send humanitarian aid to the victims of this man- made famine, which claimed the lives of millions of Ukrainians. The UNWLA responded with care and compassion, raising awareness and providing financial support to those in need. Within the same time period, aid was sent to flood-stricken areas in the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine and the state of Mississippi in the U.S. In 1941, during the turbulence of World War II, the UNWLA appealed to President Roosevelt for help and engaged in the work of the Red Cross and the humanitarian aid projects of the United Ukrainian American Relief Committee (UUARC), providing support for displaced persons and ref - ugees in Europe. A fund was created specifically assisting Ukrainians in their resettlement efforts in the U.S. The UNWLA’s advocacy and social welfare proj- ects also extended to global diplomacy. In 1945 the UNWLA made an impassioned appeal to U.S. President Harry S. Truman, urging him to prevent the forced repatriation of Ukrainians who had fled the Soviet Union and were now living in displaced persons camps in Europe. We assisted Ukrainians who were displaced by the calamities of World War II and settled in the U.S. in various ways. UNWLA emergency response to the Holodomor, February 1934.
