UNWLA Reads Що ми читаємо в СУА? Дитина Великої Війни береже останні секунди мирного життя дитини, що війни не знала. І вони з бабусею, кожна в своїй кімнатці, водночас шепочуть найстрашніші слова їхнього життя: «Почалося» — цитата з книги Олександра Михеда «Котик, півник, шафка» . Це «почалося» досі живе в пам’яті. Книжка читається на одному подиху, хоча й ретравматизує. Та попри це — дуже життє - ствердна: про любов, родину, тяглість поколінь, незламність і справді важливе. Майже кожну сторінку хочеться розібрати на цитати. A child of the Great War clings to the final seconds of peace once known by a child untouched by war. She and her grandmother, each in their own room, whisper the most terrifying words of their lives: “It has begun.” — from Oleksandr Mykhed’s The Cat, the Rooster, the Cabinet . That “it has begun” still feels vivid and fresh in memory. The book is a one-sitting read, though it retraumatizes. Still, it’s deeply life-affirming — about love, family, generational continuity, resilience, and what truly matters. You’ll want to underline something on nearly every page. All the books mentioned above are available at your local library or bookstore. Це про зруйновані мрії, втрати, біль і силу. Про тих, хто виживав, коли здавалося неможливо. Події переносять у 2014 рік, на Схід Укра - їни — туди, де почалася війна, а всі довкола продовжували казати «АТО». Я не планувала її читати, але книга сама мене знайшла. Уже з перших сторінок стало зрозуміло — вона важлива. Її варто прочитати не лише українцям. Daughter is a novel that leaves a mark. It’s not about romance or maternal love — it’s about shattered dreams, loss, pain, and resilience. Set in Eastern Ukraine in 2014, during the early days of the war that many still called the “ATO,” it tells the story of people who kept going when it seemed impossible. I didn’t plan to read it — the book chose me. From the first pages, I knew: this is a story that needs to be read — by Ukrainians and beyond. Я бачила різні відгуки на цей есей — не всі позитивні, з огляду, зокрема, на деякі висловлювання, з якими частина читачів не погоджувалася. Але мені пані Оксана завжди імпонувала, і ця книжка особисто мені дуже сподобалася, особливо тому, що я нещодавно сама пройшла власний шлях особистої деколо - нізації. У книжці йдеться про витоки російсько-української війни. Вона містить багато тверезої та змістовної інформації, яка допомагає побачити причинно-на - слідкові зв’язки — особливо тим, хто досі їх не усвідомив або не систематизував. Однозначно рекомендую. I’d like to share my impressions of Oksana Zabuzhko’s book The Longest Journey . Despite some mixed reviews — particularly regarding certain statements not everyone agrees with — I really enjoyed this book, especially because I recently went through my own process of personal decolonization. The book offers a deep understanding of the roots of the russian- Ukrainian war and helps readers piece together the cause-and-effect connections. I highly recommend it.
