20 OUR LIFE • August 2025 ДІЯЛЬНІСТЬ ВІДДІЛІВ І ЧЛЕНКИНЬ • BRANCH & MEMBER NEWS Watching the bravery of the Ukrainian people when facing rus- sia’s huge army and its war machine was astounding. Men and women volunteered for military duty by the thousands. They were truly heroes in Prof. Xu’s eyes. In his opinion, Ukraine’s army not only is exceptionally brave and committed, but fights with discipline, intelligence, and creativity. He likens President Zelensky to Winston Churchill and other unique leaders in histo - ry. And he is convinced that these heroic traits will bring Ukraine victory over russia. Prof. Xu’s empathy toward Ukraine and its people prompted him to start an amazing project, a visual artwork of the war, in the form of digital images on his iPad, documenting events of the war daily, producing an image every single day. Since the onset of the war in 2022, he has produced over 1,200 drawings. He calls his work Ukraine Every Day . Prof. Xu has produced scenes of everyday life at the front, sol - diers with their weapons, in their tanks, loading ammunition into tanks, soldiers cooking, resting, soldiers with their pet cats or dogs, doctors and nurses treating the wounded, scenes of destruction, grief, resistance. Faces are drawn with great deli - cacy and understanding. He also drew impromptu portraits of world leaders and politicians from both sides of the war, under - scoring the deep divide of beliefs, and of unexpected and very moving private supporters of Ukraine. Although Prof. Xu spoke in Chinese, his quiet and approach - able demeanor soon had the audience spellbound and deep - On June 1, 2025, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s Intelligence Direc- torate conducted a massive drone raid deep inside russian territory, destroying only military targets. Russia suffered significant losses. #UkraineEveryDay No.1193 After the outbreak of the russian invasion of Ukraine, 75-year-old Tsuchi Fumi from Japan sold his house and went to Kharkiv in March 2022 to open a small restaurant, providing 500 free meals to local residents every day. It was a very international audience, showing a good grasp of current events, with many pertinent questions asked after his presenta - tion. Prof. Xu graciously presented Branch 113 with four of his drawings of the war, which were auctioned off during the evening. The funds from the auc - tion will go toward humanitarian sup - port in Ukraine. We were happy to see many friends from other UNWLA branches in at - tendance. The President of Branch 64, Lidia Slysh, gave a particularly warm congratulatory greeting on our branch’s 40th Anniversary. The evening ended with a recep - tion of wine and delicious appetizers prepared by the Ukrainian Institute of America. Editor’s note: The image captions are Prof. Xu’s own comments on his draw- ings.
