8 OUR LIFE • September-October 2024 Our keynote speaker at the Saturday luncheon was Oryst- slava Sydorchuk, president of the Ukrainian Women’s League of Ukraine. Her message was clear as she thanked us for the continuity of our Ukrainian identity in the diaspora and for our compassionate hearts, which beat in unison with the hearts of millions of Ukrainians. She went on to say that the history of the UNWLA is a history of struggle not just for the rights of women, but also for the preservation of our language, culture, and his - tory. These are our weapons, which russia is aiming to destroy. With our advocacy here in the U.S. we are enlightening our citizens with the truth. With our humanitarian aid to Ukraine we are supporting its army, the refugees who had to flee their homes, and the children and elderly who have suffered deeply from the trauma of the war. We are doing our part; as Kostianty - na Malycka instructed, “we are not allowed to just stand by, we must become a strong, active, and creative force.” In a deeply moving moment, Ms. Sydorchuk presented Na - talie Pawlenko with a medal from His Beatitude Metropolitan Epiphanius of Kyiv and All Ukraine “For sacrifice and love for Ukraine.” Natalie accepted the medal on behalf of all Soyuz- ianky and pledged to continue to work for the good of Ukraine. As our working sessions resumed, we were fortunate to listen to a presentation and discussion led by Professor Jerry Flynn, a scholar in the areas of leadership and management at Rut - gers Business School. He introduced several approaches to leadership, including transformational leadership during times of great change, referring to the overwhelming leadership de- mands that must be met to fully address times of crisis. He shared a video of Ursula von der Leyen’s recent comments at the Summit on Peace, where she expressed the need for glob - The medal presented to Natalie Pawlenko, which she accepted on behalf of all Soyuz- ianky. Медаль, вручена голові СУА Наталі Павленко, яку вона прийняла від імені всіх союзянок. Professor Jerry Flynn presents an in-depth lecture on transformational leadership. Професор Джеррі Флінн прочитав розгорнуту лекцію про трансформаційне лідерство The newly elected UNWLA National Board together with Honorary President Marianna Zajac, many wearing the new UNWLA scarf designed by Andrea Kulish, our Member-at-Large from North Carolina.
