6 OUR LIFE • September-October 2024 Honorary Presidents Marianna Zajac and Iryna Kurowyckyj light the UNWLA Tree of Life. Почесні голови Маріянна Заяць та Ірина Куровицька запалюють Дерево життя СУА. Officers of the XXXIII UNWLA Convention presid - ed over the event for all three days. Посадовi особи Конвенційного комітету ХХХІІІ Конвенції головували на Конвенції протягом усіх трьох днів. Yes, our most important task as Soyuzianky and for all Ukrainians today is to advocate for Ukraine. When we ed- ucate the general public about Ukraine, its history and its culture, we are advocating. When we cultivate by preserv - ing and promoting our Ukrainian heritage and language for future generations, via exhibits, festivals, concerts, camps, and schools, we are advocating. When we care about those less fortunate, and those who are affected by the war in Ukraine today, we are advocating. When the UNWLA provides humanitarian aid to help our soldiers in Ukraine and help the refugees who have fled the war, we are showing the world that we care. As the plenary session for the day came to an end, we hustled outside in front of the hotel in our full vyshyvanky attire for a group photo. Imagine, all 150 of us in beautiful vyshyvanky of various colors and designs. What a sight it was! The sun shone brightly on this beautiful 85-degree summer day, astonishing even our Floridian sisters. “Can it be that we are in New Jersey?” As we re-entered the hotel, the staff and guests were in awe of the beauty of our vyshyvanky , showering us with compliments. Did we know we were “advocating”? A Romanian waitress com- mented that she wished her community had an organi - zation as great as ours. We sometimes fail to realize how special and unique our UNWLA is. To “cool off” after rel- ishing the sunshine, we returned to the hotel for our first cocktail hour and to browse the splendid boutique organ- ized by our Boutique committee. At dinner we were graced by the presence of Ukraine’s distinguished Ambassador to the U.S., Oksana Markarova. The artist and vocalist Anna Zaiachkivska (Branch 137, Clifton, NJ) sang beautiful songs during dinner, and her colorful art was on full display in the hallway facing our convention meeting room. Oksana Markarova pointed out that the UNWLA is one of the oldest and most respected Ukrainian organizations in America as it approaches its 100th anniversary. The UNWLA has implemented thousands of charitable, cultur - al, and educational projects and advocates for the inter - ests of Ukraine at many levels. She said she was pleased to see so many young women among the convention partici- pants. She was inspired by women’s strength, energy, and zeal to continue the fight for justice and peace for Ukraine and for just punishment for russian criminals. Ambassador Markarova was deeply touched to receive the first UNWLA Spirit of Ukraine Award, which she said she would dedicate to all Ukrainian women, to all who choose victory for Ukraine. She thanked Natalie Pawlenko and the former presidents of the UNWLA for their tireless work for the benefit of our common Ukrainian cause. On Day 2 , Saturday, we greeted the morning with break - fast followed by a plenary session. The minutes from the previous XXXII convention were approved, and reports from the members of the National Board and Audit Com- mittee were entered into the record.
