НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ • Вересень-Жовтень 2024 5 “Heritage and Strength” Where We Are Now – Where We Are Headed My dear Soyuzianky! What a fabulous convention we recently enjoyed! I hope all our members and delegates who attended were pleased with the outcome. Members of the seven branch- es of the New Jersey Regional Council worked diligently pre - paring for the convention under the leadership of the Convention Chair, Oksana Konyk, and the UNWLA Convention Coordinator, Oksana Lodziuk Krywulych. Our participants worked just as hard as they learned, shared, and planned to position the UNWLA for the future. And we “played,” too, socializing with old friends and making new friends along the way. While doing so, we en- joyed beautiful performances by Ukrainian artists between ses- sions and during our Saturday evening banquet. On Day 1 , Friday, September 13, the hotel lobby bustled with energy as our members and delegates arrived from various cities and states at the Parsippa- ny Sheraton in New Jersey. The rolling of suitcases, the warm hellos, the hugs and kisses and surprise recognition of friends we had known from the past added to the excitement. We had not seen some friends since our youth when we attend- ed summer camps, Soyuzivka, dance camps, and many other Ukrainian venues that are still available to our children and grandchildren today. Our Reg - istration committee worked industriously to make sure all incoming members received all the materials needed to assist them with the convention pro- gram over the next three days. Marusia Kvit-Flynn , UNWLA 3rd Vice President After our members settled in, our existing National Board met, and national president Natalie Pawlenko had an opportunity to thank all the members for their extraordinary service over the past three years. The XXXIII Convention began at 3:30 p.m. with a processional march of the members of the previous Na - tional Board, Regional Council presidents bearing flags, Stand - ing Chairs, Executive Commit - tee members, honored guests, Honorary Presidents, and finally our president, Natalie Pawlen- ko. Natalie initiated the lighting of the traditional Tree of Life, followed by our two Honorary Presidents, Marianna Zajac and Iryna Kurowyckyj. The plenary session began with the UNWLA prayer and the singing of the UNWLA, Ukrainian, and Ameri - can anthems by Oksana Telepko from Branch 134. A quorum was established, program rules of procedures given, and the agen- da for the convention approved. Convention chair Oksana Konyk welcomed everyone, and Na- talie Pawlenko shared opening remarks regarding the purpose of the convention and the im- portance of the event. She also tasked everyone with a “home - work” assignment: to meet and connect with at least five new Soyuzianky. The convention officers in - cluded Natalia Santarsiero, Chair; Sophia Koshiw, Vice Chair; Olenka Krupa, 2nd Vice Chair; Yuliya Penchak, Secre - tary; and Olena Hrubiy, Secre - tary. Honored guests were also introduced. To end the Day 1 plenary session, speaker Mar - ianna Tretiak, our national Ad- vocacy Chair, discussed the im- portance of advocacy, especially following russia’s invasion and unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine. Marianna is also the Chair of the American Coalition for Ukraine. The opening ceremony of the XXXIII UNWLA Convention included a proces- sional march of the members of the National Board together with their flags. Урочиста хода всіх членів Головної управи та внесення прапорів округ на церемонії відкриття XXXIII Конвенції.
