After a brief hiatus during which she made her first visits to Ukraine (in 1985 and 1987), Marta returned to The Ukrainian Weekly in 1988, assuming the position of associate editor and becoming the first accredited U.S. journalist correspondent in Ukraine. While working and liv - ing in Ukraine, she met her future husband, Da- nylo Yanevsky of Kyiv; they were married on May 21, 1994. Marta left the Weekly in 1996 (although she continued to contribute to the paper from time to time) and worked for various programs, all re- lated to helping Ukraine shed its Soviet past. She served as a communications strategist in Kyiv for the U.S. Agency for International Development (1997–1999); as team leader for the Ukraine Mar - ket Reform Education Program of Gavin Anderson/ PBN Company (1999–2002); as chief of party at the Honored Benefactor Myron Krawczuk receives his award from UNWLA president Natalie Pawlenko as his mother, UNWLA Honorary President Anna Krawczuk, looks on. During her seven years at the helm of Fulbright’s office in Kyiv, Marta helped more than 300 Ukrainian schol - ars receive grants in order to pursue higher edu- cation in the U.S. She held this position until her untimely passing on August 16, 2020. The Honored Benefactor award was given to Myron Krawczuk for his unstinting support of the UNWLA Scholarship Office since 1987, when he built the first Scholarship database. For 37 years, he has been consulting, purchasing, installing, programming, updating computers and printers, and supporting the users in the Scholarship office. More importantly, Mr. Krawczuk’s support enables the UNWLA Scholarship Committee to manage electronically thousands of student scholarship records that had previously been managed via a paper-based system. His generous donation of his time and resources over the decades is deeply ap- preciated by the entire organization.
