24 OUR LIFE • September-October 2024 UNWLA Recognizes Six Honored Members at XXXIII Convention Natalie Pawlenko , President, UNWLA The UNWLA Honored Member or Honored Benefactor (for men) award is a prestigious recognition bestowed upon members and, occasionally, non-members. Given only once every three years at the UNWLA convention, the award celebrates individuals who have demonstrat - ed outstanding dedication and exceptional service to the organization and whose contributions have had a significant impact on the advancement of the UNWLA’s mission. The award is meant to recognize individuals who embody the ideals of the UNWLA, showing exem - plary commitment to promoting Ukrainian heritage, culture, and humanitarian causes. It highlights the organization’s legacy of leadership, volunteerism, and advocacy. Criteria for Receiving the Award 1. Long-Term Service: Recipients are often individu - als with a long-standing history of active involvement in the UNWLA, demonstrating sustained commitment over the years. 2. Significant Contributions: Honorees have made notable contributions to the organization’s projects or initiatives, or to the broader Ukrainian-American community. 3. Leadership: The award recognizes those who have taken on leadership roles or have led impactful initiatives that align with the organization’s values. 4. Advocacy for Ukrainian Causes: Recipients often show a strong commitment to promoting Ukrainian culture, language, and history, and to advocating for humanitarian support for Ukraine. 5. Inspirational Role Models: Honorees serve as role models for other members, encouraging active participation and dedication to the UNWLA’s goals. The award not only honors individuals but also en- courages continued efforts to uphold the mission and values of the UNWLA. At this year’s XXXIII Convention, the UNWLA National Board was pleased to recognize six individuals: Luba Bilowchtchuk (Branch 98, Holm - del/Middletown, NJ); Chrystia Boyko (Branch 3, Phoe- nix, AZ); Nadia Nynka (Branch 75, Maplewood, NJ); Maria Shust; Marta Kolomayets (In Memoriam); and Honored Benefactor Myron Krawczuk of New Jersey. Luba Bilowchtchuk became the Scholarship Pro- gram Chairperson in 1993, the year the UNWLA began developing the Scholarship Program in Ukraine. She was responsible for working out the framework and process for scholarships in Ukraine with the Soyuz Ukrainok Ukraine Scholarship Com- mission and other Ukrainian partners. To accom- plish this, Luba and then treasurer Orysia Jacus vis- ited Ukraine three times (1996, 1998, 2001), using their personal resources. They met with partners and students in Lviv, Kyiv, Crimea, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, and other regions. In 2000, Luba Bilowchtchuk and then UNWLA president Iryna Kurowyckyj and the UNWLA Scholarship Program treasurer visited Brazil and met with former scholarship recipients, Bish - op Jerimiah Ferens, and Olga Koczagin, former director of the Colegio Santa Olga institute and boarding school for girls. They visited Ukrainian Brazilian communities, schools, seminaries, and colonies.
