22 OUR LIFE • September-October 2024 Honoring Champions of the Ukrainian Cause: The UNWLA’s 2024 Spirit of Ukraine Awards In a poignant ceremony during the Saturday evening banquet at the UNWLA XXXIII Convention, three exceptional champions of Ukraine received the or - ganization’s 2024 Spirit of Ukraine Award. The event celebrated these honorees for their unwavering dedication to the Ukrainian cause and their signifi- cant contributions to the global community. Ambassador Oksana Markarova Her Excellency Ambassador Oksana Markarova has been at the forefront of strengthening Ukraine's international relations since her appointment as the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States in 2021. Her remarkable career also includes her tenure as Ukraine's Minister of Finance, where she co-authored the nation’s macroeconomic revival program and led initiatives that enhanced fiscal transparency and economic stability. Markarova’s steadfast leadership and advocacy have been piv - otal in advancing Ukraine's interests on the world stage, making her a worthy recipient of this pres- tigious award. Oksana Bilozir A towering figure in Ukrainian culture and poli - tics, Oksana Bilozir has left an indelible mark as a musician, educator, and politician. Her illustrious career includes serving as Ukraine’s Minister of Culture and as a member of the Ukrainian Parlia - ment. Ms. Bilozir has been a staunch supporter of Ukrainian soldiers and prisoners of war amid the ongoing conflict with russia. Her tireless efforts in both cultural and political spheres, coupled with her support for the UNWLA over the years, have profoundly impacted Ukraine and its people. UNWLA VP – Membership Valentyna Tabaka ac- cepted the award on behalf of Ms. Bilozir. The World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Or - ganizations (WFUWO) Team at the United Nations For over three decades, the WFUWO team has been a steadfast advocate for Ukraine at the Unit - ed Nations. Composed of volunteers who are also members of the UNWLA, this team has played a crucial role in drawing international attention to human rights violations in Ukraine. The team’s en- during commitment to Ukraine’s cause has been instrumental in shaping global perceptions and policies. UNWLA President Natalie Pawlenko expressed deep admiration for the award recipients, noting that "this award is a testament to the leadership and actions that have had a considerable impact on the Ukrainian community and beyond." The organization views the honorees' dedication as a reflection of the values and mission upheld by the UNWLA, serving as a source of inspiration for con - tinued support for Ukraine. The Spirit of Ukraine Award is more than just a recognition of individual achievements; it embod- ies the resilience, courage, and hope of the Ukrain - ian people, especially during these challenging times. The work of these honorees stands as a bea- con of inspiration, encouraging others to continue their efforts in support of Ukraine. Natalie Pawlenko presented the UNWLA’s Spirit of Ukraine Award to Ambassador Oksana Markarova.
