4 OUR LIFE • May 2024 Gala Event Raises Funds to Support Children Affected by War in Ukraine The UNWLA and the Ukrainian Professionals Organization held a fundraising gala on April 4 to benefit the UNWLA’s support of orphanages and safe spaces for vulnerable children and women affected by the war in Ukraine. “We want to bring world atten - tion to the suffering of children under the brutal russian occupa - tion of Ukraine,” states UNWLA president Natalie Pawlenko. “More than 2,000 children have been injured or killed, and more than 20,000 forcibly abducted since the start of russia’s full- scale invasion in 2022.” The 2024 Sunflower Gala for Ukraine took place at the Ukrain - At the Sunflower Gala for Ukraine (l-r): Marta Fedoriw, Chair, Return Ukraine’s Children advocacy initiative; Oksana Lodziuk Krywulych, UNWLA Officer-at-Large; UNWLA President Natalie Pawlenko; Japanese Consul Reiki Uema; Maestro Oksana Lyniv; performers Vira Slywotzky, Pavlo Gintov, Odarka Polanskyj Stockert, Valeria Sholokhova. Natalie Pawlenko noted that the event is an important lead-up to the 100th anniversa - ry of the 1925 founding of the UNWLA. More than 130 guests attended the wonderful evening of Ukrain - ian culture. The guest of honor was world-renowned Ukrainian conductor Oksana Lyniv, music director of Teatro Comunale di Bologna since 2022, making her the first female chief conductor of an Italian opera house. Ms. Lyniv made history as the first female conductor of the Bayreuth Festival in Germany in 2021. Her debut with Puccini’s Turandot at the Metropolitan Opera in New York was another first – she was the first Ukrainian to conduct at the Met. She is dedicated to nurturing young musical talents and is the found - er and chief conductor of the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine/YsOU. The event was supported by the Polish consulate, represent - ed by Consul General Adrian Kubicki, and the Japanese con - sulate, represented by Consul Reiki Uema.
