6 OUR LIFE • June 2024 The UNWLA Pinning Ceremony The UNWLA pin is a symbol of our organization, which was created in 1925. Today, the UNWLA is the longest-running and largest Ukrainian women’s organization in the U.S. The UNWLA Pinning Ceremony welcomes new members into the UNWLA sisterhood. The UNWLA gold pin may also be awarded for 50 years of active and devoted involvement in the UNWLA sisterhood. The Pinning Ceremony should ideally take place once a year during the Branch annual meeting, when existing and new members gather to conduct UNWLA business, including elections. The UNWLA pins are to be awarded only to UNWLA members in good standing – i.e., members actively involved in the organization and with a good overall personal reputation. The Pinning Ceremony is a celebration and should be conducted as such. It should include, but is not limited to, the following elements: • Branch President greeting and review of the significance of the UNWLA pin: “This pin which you are about to receive is a symbol. A symbol of the generations of women who have come before us. Whose passion and de- votion created this great organization which will soon be celebrating its 100th year of unbroken service. Generations of women whose great love for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people have been the driving force behind their dedication and com- mitment. An organization that has never wavered from its mission to advocate, educate, cultivate, and care. So, when you wear this pin, remember that it is upon the shoulders of great women we stand. That this pin represents an organization with a shining reputation, with a membership from the east coast to the west coast of America. This pin represents your pledge to the UNWLA and the trust that we place in you.” • New members are pinned by the Branch Pres- ident or member of the Branch Executive one at a time and are awarded a membership certificate. • Branch President or member of the Branch Ex - ecutive congratulates all the new members. • A group photo is taken of the new members together with the entire Branch. Please share on social media so we can see your newly pinned sisters! A member of Branch 107, San Jose, CA, is pinned at a recent ceremony. UNWLA President Natalie Pawlenko pins Christine Ter - shakovec during the Ukraine Action Summit in Washing - ton, DC, in April 2024.
