2024 5 Marianna Zajac Named President of Central New York Regional Council I became a member of the UNWLA by co-founding Branch 95 in the upstate New York communities of Poughkeepsie/Kerhonkson in 1991 with the “gentle” nudging of our dear Olha Hnateyko, Hon- ored UNWLA member and Honorary President of the Board of Trustees of the Ukrainian Museum in New York City. We were a scattered bunch of women from various backgrounds and geograph- ical origins, who have since accomplished much in the Hudson Valley American milieu these past 30+ years but, more importantly, have remained close friends or “sestry” ever since our hum- ble beginnings! This was my inauguration to the UNWLA and initiated my UNWLA journey, which culminated in June 2021 when I humbly accepted the title of Honorary UNWLA President. The path to that date was filled with many new initiatives, projects, challenges, and relationships, and with wonderful and unforgettable experiences that have enriched my life and that of my family. My positions included the office of Branch 95 Presi- dent, 1991–2002; President, Central NY Regional Council, 2002–2005; UNWLA Vice President (Pub- lic Relations), 2005–2008; and lastly UNWLA Na- tional President, 2008–2021. So, when the Central NY Regional Council branch presidents invited me In January of this year, UNWLA Honorary President Marianna Zajac agreed to take on the role of President of the Central New York Regional Council. Her long association with the UNWLA is known to most of our members, but for the benefit of those who joined the organization more recently, Marianna shares some highlights from her UNWLA journey. to fill the vacant post of RC President in January of this year, I could not decline – it actually never even crossed my mind. Currently I also volunteer on the Executive Com- mittee of the Ukrainian Museum in New York City, and served as its First VP in 2008–2021; I have also been First Vice President of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations (WFUWO) since 2019 and a member of the Board of Directors of the Ukrainian World Congress since 2008. Volunteering in the UNWLA has proven to be both inspiring and contagious in our family. My mother (born in Ukraine and landed in Canada at the age of five in 1929) was a dedicated member of UNWLA Branch 32 in New Jersey (which has since disband - ed); her dedication to the UNWLA cause and to her UNWLA “sestry” is fondly remembered. Her grand - daughter – my daughter – is currently the UNWLA Treasurer, and now my young granddaughter asks her Mama, “When is your next call with the ‘pani,’ Mamo?” These words make my heart “smile.” Thank you to the members of the Central NY Re - gional Council for inviting me to continue on my UNWLA journey. We will once again work together for the good of the UNWLA and for Ukraine’s victo- ry. Slava Ukraini!
