18 OUR LIFE • June 2024 ENGin: Connecting Cultures, Empowering Voices НАВЧАЄМО • EDUCATE Reconnecting with roots through language: Anastasia’s journey with ENGin Adopted from Odesa by a U.S. family at just 17 months old, Anastasia was distant from the language and culture of her homeland for much of her early life. When a Ukrainian exchange student came to stay with her family, the experience sparked a desire to learn Ukrainian and re - connect with her cultural roots – leading her to ENGin. Through ENGin, Anastasia not only improved her Ukrainian-lan- guage skills but also gained a deeper personal connection to the traditions and history of her birthplace. Now, as a volunteer, Anastasia helps other Ukrainians enhance their English fluency and connect with global cultures. Her journey underscores the power of cultural exchange, whether learning something entirely new or reconnecting to one’s cultural and linguistic roots. Anastasia’s story is one of many that illustrate the trans- formative power of language and connection through ENGin. Her journey from rediscovery to engagement exemplifies how language serves as a vital bridge between Ukrainians and the international community, em- powering individuals to connect more deeply both to Ukrainian heritage and culture and to their roles as global citizens. The power of a conversation Launched in 2020 by Ukraini- an American Katerina Manoff, ENGin is a grassroots nonprofit changing the world one conver - sation at a time. ENGin connects English-speaking volunteers with motivated Ukrainians for online speaking practice and cross-cul- tural exchange. In just four years, ENGin has connected over 44,000 volunteers and students. Through simple weekly video chat conversations, volunteers like Anastasia make a significant impact — helping English-learn- ers in Ukraine break the lan- guage barrier, offering friend - ship and emotional support, and introducing them to a new culture. You can help Ukraine speak to the world! In just one hour per week, you can profoundly impact the life of a Ukrainian aiming to improve their English. By becoming an ENGin volunteer, you could open doors to new educational and career opportunities for some- one in Ukraine, all from the com- fort of your home. Anastasia, an ENGin volunteer, was able to reconnect with her Ukrain - ian roots through weekly online con - versations with an ENGin student in Ukraine. • Exchange cultures: Each conversation is a two-way street.
