We often get com - fortable with the way things are and prefer to continue with the status quo. Simply stated, it’s easy to stay put. Change can, in fact, be overwhelming or seem not right. But it can also reap unexpected benefits that may not come about unless we do change something. Many of us find a need to change something to promote personal growth and find solu - Change and Changing tions in life that electrify us. Changing what you do or how you do it requires a partial rein - venting of yourself — specifically by reconnecting with yourself to find out who you are, what you like and dislike, and what you want to be different. Answers to these questions can set the stage for the “new you.” The tricky part about change is that you must first decide to do it and then figure out what you want to change and why. The fear of change is evolu - tionary and dates back to ances - tral times. Our brain is actually hardwired to prefer consistency and routine. When we know what to expect, we are not stressed or anxious; however, when we are uncertain about a change, we begin to feel stressed and anxious. Devel - oping a clearer picture of what might be a good outcome of our “change” can help alleviate fear of the change. Growth and change begin with a single tiny step. The process is also a culmination of trial and er - ror. You can begin by looking for activities that make you happy. Set aside time to indulge in your passions. Start out with simple tasks like exploring new activ - ities. These small changes will jump start the momentum and will enable you to pursue more complex and more challeng - ing changes. Small, incremental changes each day will result in a payoff that begins to develop in a reasonable, encouraging way. Remember that life is full of op - portunities. As we end the year and look forward to the new year, this is an excellent time to reflect on what changes we would like to make. Reframe change as an invitation for a world of new pos - sibilities. Start with a positive at - titude, and stay open and enthu - siastic. Look for change to help you build resilience, which leads to increased confidence and ad - aptability. Change is daunting, but it can be good. Wishing you the best Christ - mas ever, with health and hap - piness, and successful changes in the new year.
