28 OUR LIFE • December 2024 ДІЯЛЬНІСТЬ ВІДДІЛІВ І ЧЛЕНКИНЬ • BRANCH & MEMBER NEWS UNWLA Detroit Region Celebrates Soyuzianka Day Barbara Carson, Paranka Mazurek, and Ruth Shamraj , Branch 50, Ann Arbor, MI The delicious food and festive decorations made the Soyuz - ianka Day celebration on Octo - ber 13 at the Ukrainian Cultur - al Center in Warren, Michigan, truly joyous. We were walking on clouds and feeling a little guilty for the privilege of enjoy - ing such abundance on a peace - ful Sunday afternoon in Michi - gan. We often forget how good we have it. At the entrance to the ban - quet hall, a cheerful blue and yellow banner proclaimed our mission: Detroit Region Soyuz - ianky . Our work continues: Ad - vocate. Educate. Cultivate. Care . It was illustrated with an image of hands holding a bright yellow sunflower within a field of sun - flowers with green leaves. After we found our seats, we flocked to the hors d’oeuvres table. Mariya Rybchuk from Branch 76, with the help of many other Soyuzianky, treated us to a sumptuous and elegant array of savory zakusky . Many women worked dili - gently to prepare for this spe - cial day, acknowledging the efforts and accomplishments of our members, our branch - es, and the Detroit Region as a whole. As experience teaches us, volunteers are often pulled in many directions, juggling a number of commitments simul - taneously. Soyuzianka Day gave us permission to pat ourselves and each other on the back — to celebrate ourselves and each other! Planning Committee Chair and Master of Ceremonies Natalia Maruszczak devoted countless hours to brainstorm - ing and organizing volunteers to make this a special celebration. Planning Committee member Paranka Mazurek worked en - thusiastically on several exhibit displays: arranging the branch activity boards, and designing and printing a clever Detroit Regional Council tree with pho - tos of each branch on the tree branches, as well as a memora - ble photo montage of members comprised of 140 slides. “Work - ing on this event and seeing it come to life filled me with pride to be a Ukrainian,” Paranka said. “Being a member of the UNWLA and working on projects with fellow Ukrainians to achieve a common goal educates me. I really enjoy learning about and working to preserve our herit - age and culture.” The celebration not only high - lighted our accomplishments but also inspired us to renew our commitment to the moun- tains of sometimes heartbreak - ing and backbreaking — but meaningful — work we've dedi - cated ourselves to. Detroit Regional Council pres - ident Oksanna Gudz highlighted the many accomplishments of the region’s branches, which were honored with 25 hramo - ty (award certificates) at the XXXIII UNWLA Convention held September 13–15, 2024, in the categories of advocacy, educa - tion, culture, membership, pub - lic relations, scholarship, social media, and social welfare. “The Soyuzianky Will Live on Forever,” was the title of the talk given by Dr. Roman Kolodchin. He applauded the work of the Detroit Regional Council and our members. He also expressed his gratitude for the hard work and efforts of the Detroit Region to support Ukraine and keep our culture alive. Branches donated a total of 11 delightful gift baskets for the raffle, with themes such as Spa Day and gourmet cof - fee-teas-cookies, etc. Some baskets contained gifts valued at over $500.
