НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ • Грудень 2024 11 Babusi Fund: Providing Support for Elderly Ukrainian Women Older women in Ukraine received financial assistance from the UNWLA during the Easter holidays, April/May 2024. Жінки літнього віку в Україні отримали фінансову допомогу від СУА під час Великодніх свят у квітні—травні 2024 р Програма «Бабусі», ініційована СУА, вже майже 60 років надає фінансову допомогу літнім жінкам в Україні. Ця ініціятива була започаткована для підтримки жінок, які мають фінансові утруднення через низькі пенсії та мінімальну соціяльну підтримку. Фонд «Бабусі» надає невеликі, але вагомі стипендії, які дозволяють отримувачам придбати найнеобхідніші речі, зокрема їжу та ліки, а також оплатити комунальні послуги, тобто покрити потреби, які українська пенсійна система часто не може адекватно задовольнити. Ця підтримка особливо важлива тепер, у час економічних труднощів, що спричинені триваючою до нині московською агресією проти України. Багатьом літнім жінкам, зокрема вдовам і тим, хто не має близьких родичів, ця стипендія дає змогу полегшити самотність та допомагає подолати фінансові труднощі. Програма також є нагодою для вшановування культурної спадщини України, оскільки чимало з цих жінок є неоціненним містком, що поєднує нас з минулим України. Завдяки постійному збору коштів, СУА та наші прихильники підтримують цю програму як частину своєї ширшої гуманітарної місії. Програма «Бабусі» зміцнює солідарність між українською діяспорою в США та літніми жінками в Україні, підтверджуючи відданість СУА гуманітарній допомозі та культурним зв’язкам. Для продовження цієї важливої ініціятиви необхідна постійна підтримка з боку членкинь, відділів СУА та інших жертводавців. The UNWLA’s Babusi Fund program has provided essential support to elderly wom - en in Ukraine for nearly 60 years. Estab - lished to help women who face financial hardship due to low pensions and limited social support, the Babusi Fund offers sti - pends to alleviate some of the financial strain on Ukraine’s elderly women. This initiative aligns with the UNWLA’s broader mission to aid vulnerable communities in Ukraine, especially as economic hardships are exacerbated by the ongoing conflict and economic disruptions. The most recent aid sent in the spring of 2024 went to 90 women in 22 regions of Ukraine. Among them were women who needed aid urgently: residents of settle - ments located in the zone of active hos - tilities, who were under constant shelling, even “at the point of a rashist machine gun” (as written in one letter of thanks), and those relocated to other regions of Ukraine. Extremely warm and touching letters of grati - tude were received from the beneficiaries. Orystslava Sydorchuk, president of the NGO (non-gov - ernmental organization) Ukrainian Women’s League of Ukraine, said: “Assistance from the UNWLA is not only fi - nancial support; it is also a symbolic gesture of gratitude to these women for their many years of dedication and work for the benefit of Ukraine. Thanks to the contribution of each member of the UNWLA and the many branches, this initiative can live and grow, giving the older generation of Ukrainian women the belief that their work is not forgot - ten. We are grateful to our sisters in the United States for their care and assistance.” The UNWLA recognized early on that many elderly wom - en, especially widows or those without close family, face significant financial insecurity. The Babusi Fund addresses this gap by providing modest yet meaningful financial aid to ensure that beneficiaries can afford basic necessities. This support has become even more critical with the war’s im - pact on Ukraine’s economy and social services. Elderly recip - ients use the stipends for essentials like food, medications, and utilities — expenditures that are difficult to cover with Ukraine’s pension payments, which are often insufficient for sustaining a stable quality of life. The program also carries cultural significance. By direct - ly supporting elderly women — many of whom represent Ukraine’s rich cultural history — the Babusi Fund honors their contributions and provides them with dignity and community recognition. Through its Babusi Fund, the UNWLA has made a lasting impact on both individual lives and the broader Ukrainian community by reducing isolation and strengthening social bonds. The ongoing support for these vulnerable individ - uals reflects the UNWLA’s deep commitment to humani - tarian efforts and serves as an enduring bridge between the Ukrainian diaspora in the United States and Ukraine’s communities in need. We encourage our branches and members to contribute annually to the Babusi Fund so that we can continue to pro - vide this meaningful support to those who need it most.
