НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ • Червень 2023 27 Branch 118 in Houston held a pysanka workshop on Saturday, March 10, at the Pokrova Ukrainian Catholic Church’s Learning Center. Branch treasurer Martha Noukas taught the class, Branch sec- retary Olha Hirka provided refresh- HONORING: OUR HEROINES Juliana Villacorta shared important facts about the work of the UNWLA over the years and recalled the words of UNWLA president Natalie Pawlenko about how Branch members should “get to know one another” in order to become a more cohesive working group. To get to know the pioneering woman who established the first UNWLA Branch in Houston, Juliana Villacorta and Branch 118 shared a newly made documentary, Ukraine’s Daughter: Justyna Uschak . The documentary recounts a 10-year period in Justyna Uschak’s life: from the time she was taken by the Nazis from her home in Ukraine during World War II, barely 16 years of age, to working in deplorable conditions in a German slave labor camp, to her arrival as a refugee in the U.S. Justyna Uschak was interviewed for the film at the age of 95, and she was able to recall in vivid detail the events of her ex - traordinary past. The 15-minute documentary was well received, and the filmmaker, Brenda Jacoby, was invited to talk about the making of the film. Ms. Jacoby was subsequently pinned an Honorary UNWLA Member of Branch 118, for her work in researching and preserving Ukrainian history. CELEBRATING: MANY BLESSINGS The celebration included a surprise appearance and sere- nade by vocalist Kozak Siromaha, who entertained the au- dience with two lovely ballads while playing his accordion. The 50+ event concluded with remarks and blessings by Father Mykola Dovzhuk. Everyone was invited to enjoy the buffet luncheon prepared by the members of Branch 118. A UNWLA membership recruitment table set up at the celebration and manned by Christine Villacorta garnered 10 new members. What a celebration it was!
