16 OUR LIFE • June 2023 THE UKRAINIAN MUSEUM 222 East 6th Street, New York, NY 10003 • www.theukrainianmuseum.org Exhibition Openings, Celebrations, and Gallery Talks Members of the Ukrainian Museum were invited to the April 27 open - ing of the Museum’s newest exhi - bitions, Janet Sobel: Wartime and Lesia Khomenko: Image and Pres - ence , where one of the highlights of the evening was the energetic, uplifting musical performance of DJ Daria Kolomiec, a Ukrainian cultural activist and one of Time magazine’s Next Generation Leaders. Daria’s exciting mix of traditional Ukrain - ian songs and rare vinyls from the 1970s with contemporary electron - ic music engaged the crowd, as did the participation of the musical group Ukrainian Village Voices, who sang traditional songs in the old polyphonic style heard in Ukraini - an villages while Daria worked the turntable, infusing those songs with a contemporary energy. Three days later, the Museum invit - ed visitors to attend special exhibi - tion talks and gallery walk-throughs with the curator of the Janet Sobel: Wartime exhibition, Museum direc - tor Peter Doroshenko, and collec - tor Gary Snyder, and with the artist Lesia Khomenko and the curator of her exhibition, Lilia Kudelia. The event was a wonderful opportu - nity to learn about the process of acquiring these works and the leg - acies of the artists, and to gain a deeper understanding of the exhi - bitions’ significance. Both Janet Sobel : Wartime and Le - sia Khomenko: Image and Presence are on view through September 2. Photos: G.
