14 OUR LIFE • June 2023 A few months into russia’s full-scale war on Ukraine, the UNWLA was approached by Anthony Fatato, an artist of Ukrainian descent who wanted to do his part to help Ukraine. Remembering his early child - hood and time spent with his Ukrainian grandmoth - er, going to church, eating Ukrainian foods at Easter, he searched out pysanka artist, ethnographer, and Soyuzianka Sofika Zielyk and pitched his novel idea to produce an NFT (non-fungible token) – simply put, a collectible in digital format. Anthony’s idea was to produce NFTs based on three original pysanky that Sofika would create for the project. His hope was that the sale of the NFTs would raise funds for the UNWLA’s humanitarian relief efforts in Ukraine. The pysanka designs are based on Sofika’s exten- sive research. Sofika created the pysanky, Anthony turned them into NFTs (digital images), and they were then minted on the Zeromint platform. The first pysanka NFT is a design from the Polissia region (Chernihiv oblast) of northern Ukraine. It features the pagan earth goddess, who was be- lieved to protect the family. This pysanka is a prayer for protection and sells for $100. The second py - sanka is based on traditional patterns from the Sokal region (Lviv oblast) in western Ukraine. The birds herald spring, a time of hope. This prayer for peace pysanka sells for $50. The third, Sunflowers, is an original design created in the artistic style of Ukrainian naïve artist Maria Prymachenko. It is a prayer for rebirth and sells for just $25. The affordable prices make these NFTs accessible to a wide audience, and their secure NFT format ensures that they remain unique and valuable.
