9 НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ • Липень-Cерпень 2022 During his State of the City of Warren address on May 5, Mayor Jim Fouts spoke with great emotion about his staunch support of the Ukrainian American community in Warren, both in the past, on the issue of the Holodomor, and now, as war rages in Ukraine. He has attended all our prayer meetings and rallies. On March 16 he held a Ukraine flag-raising ceremony at the Warren Civic Center, with several rousing calls: "End the War in Ukraine” ... “Save the Ukrainian Children” ... and “Mr. President, Grant Refugee Status to the Refugees Fleeing the War in Ukraine." During his State of the City luncheon, Mayor Fouts also singled out our own Oksana Urban, Library Director, for her great work. He concluded by announcing his intention to donate $3,000 to help Ukraine – a donation that was ultimately made via Branch 96 for the UNWLA’s Humanitarian Aid for Ukraine fund – and asking the audience of over 420 people to consider supporting Ukraine financially, too. His commitment to the residents of Warren and the future of this city is laudable. Marie Zarycky, Branch 96, Warren, MI Soyuzianky Across the Country Raise Funds for UNWLA Humanitarian Relief Dance for Ukraine: Branch 56, North Port, FL Branch 56 teamed up with private residential community Sarasota National Golf Club (SNGC) and the Fred Astaire Dance Studio of Venice, FL, on April 24 to host a Dance for Ukraine fundraiser. Some 100 residents of SNGC and their guests attended the fun event, which raised $10,123 from ticket sales and donations by SNGC residents. The Dance Studio’s professional dancers performed at the event, inviting guests to join in the dancing. Branch mem - ber Ivanka Olesnycky, along with Stefan Dacio, both SNGC residents, served on the event’s organizing committee. On a sunny and beautiful June 4, over 60 guests attended Branch 98’s Garden Tour and Fundraiser at the home of UNWLA President (and Branch 98 member) Natalie Pawlenko and her husband, Master Gardener Yuri Mischenko. Planned and executed by branch President Tamara Tallman and members of the branch gardening committee, the delightful tour featured over 200 species and varieties of native plants and perennials. Mr. Mischenko not only led the tour but also answered many questions and offered expert gardening advice about native plants. Continues on page 10
