Peter Doroshenko, an accomplished and innovative museum leader with extensive international experience, is the new director of The Ukrainian Museum. Doroshenko is known for his trailblazing approach to cultural institutions and for amplifying them to become much talked about and dynamic. For 11 years before his arrival in New York, Doroshenko was the director at the Dallas Contemporary, Texas, the largest non-collecting museum in the U.S. Previously, he had been the founding president and artistic director at the PinchukArtCentre, Kyiv, where he organized global exhibitions and collection programs that quickly positioned Kyiv on the international art scene. He has held director positions at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, United Kingdom; SMAK – Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Ghent, Belgium; and inova – Institute of Visual Arts, Milwaukee; and curator posts at both the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, and the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse. Doroshenko has organized more than 200 exhibitions over the past 35 years, including shows by Ukrainian artists Serhiy Bratkov, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, Boris Mikhailov, Anastasia Momontenko, and Yelena Yemchuk. In 2007, 2009, and 2017, he was the 34 OUR LIFE • July-August 2022 UKRAINIAN MUSEUM WELCOMES NEW DIRECTOR commissioner for the Ukrainian National Pavilions at the Venice Biennale. Most recently, Doroshenko curated an exhibition of Ukrainian artist Zinaida’s new videos as a collateral exhibition for the 2022 Venice Biennale, garnering accolades from both visitors and the international press. In addition to directing major institutions and curating exhibitions, Doroshenko has lectured and taught at post-graduate programs, including the Core Program, Houston; Le Pavillon/Palais de Tokyo, Paris; de Ateliers, Amsterdam; and the Whitney Independent Study Program, New York. In 2002 and 2003, Doroshenko organized major lectures and learning programs for the Madrid-based art fair ARCO. While on the board of trustees of the Soros Centre for Contemporary Art, Kyiv, from 1997 to 1999, he chaired the education committee, implementing the first formal learning programs in Kyiv surrounding temporary exhibitions. “With my steadfast commitment to the Ukrainian art scene since 1993, I have witnessed the progression of both artists and institutions throughout Ukraine. I am excited about the important history and great potential The Ukrainian Museum holds and how it can be a mirror to the rich cultural activities in Ukraine. In these tragic and unsettling times, with the horrific war in Ukraine, the world now knows more about us, and our culture should continue to create a context for what it means to be Ukrainian,” stated Doroshenko. In early March 2022, with the outbreak of war in Ukraine, Doroshenko reached out to Guillaume Cerutti, the CEO of Christie’s auction house, and his staff to create a major auction of works by both international and Ukrainian artists. Held on May 13 in New York, the auction raised $503,000 for Doctors Without Borders and their medical efforts in Ukraine. “Peter Doroshenko possesses a unique combination of extensive museum leadership experience, expansive knowledge of Ukrainian art, and a proven record of organizing outstanding exhibitions, all of which make him ideally suited for this important role,” said Chryzanta Hentisz, president of The Ukrainian Museum’s Board of Trustees. “We have great confidence that, at this critical time in Ukraine’s history, his vision and passion will help advance the Museum’s position as one of the world’s preeminent Ukrainian cultural institutions.” Doroshenko succeeds Maria Shust, who served as director from the Museum’s establishment almost 46 years ago until her recent retirement.
