31 НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ • Липень-Cерпень 2022 At its general membership meeting on May 3, Branch 56 hon - ored two beloved members who are moving away from Florida. LARISSA SHPON moved to North Port in 1994 and joined Branch 56 in 1996, becoming the branch’s vice president for one term. For the past 11 years, she served as the branch’s Corresponding Secretary. Several times over the past 25 years, Larissa has served as a delegate to the UNWLA’s national con - vention. She has also chaired and worked on several commit - tees, including the annual branch picnic committee, the 25th anniversary committee established to honor St. Mary’s Ukrain - ian Catholic Church, and the committee that participated on behalf of Branch 56 in the annual church bazaar. Larissa also acted as mistress of ceremonies for many events in the Ukrain - ian community at large and for Branch 56 specifically. She was a longtime member of both St. Mary’s choir and the choir or - ganized by Branch 56. Larissa is moving to Philadelphia, PA. IRENE COPIE was also honored on May 3. Irene moved to Sarasota County approximately 16 years ago. After join - ing Branch 56 about four years ago, she quickly became an important member. Irene chaired and worked on the an - nual county library system displays, as well as the embroi - dery guild and its displays, and routinely arranged pysanka demonstrations in the community at large. Her extensive knowledge of Ukrainian traditional arts and crafts was shared throughout Sarasota County via her branch activities. Irene authored a book on the art of creating pysanky and, with her husband, wrote another book on Ukraine for the North Port Ukrainian American Club; both books were published by Vic - tor Lisnyczyj. Irene has moved to Rochester, NY. Each year, the Philadelphia Regional Council prepares Easter baskets for our elderly Soyuz - ianky who, for various reasons, can no longer prepare traditional Ukrainian baskets of food to be blessed. Many are home-bound and live alone, and some have limited mobility. This year, the chair of the Social Welfare Com - mittee, Vera Jaryi, organized five Soyuzianky (Volodymyra Dukh, Zenia Brozyna, Iryna Bucz - kowski, Eryna Korchynsky, and Halyna Pupin) to help her with the Easter basket project at our Domivka in the Ukrainian Educational and Cul - tural Center (UECC). They bought colorful green baskets, filled them with traditional Easter foods ( paska , kobasa , eggs, butter and cheese, horse - radish, and other items), and decorated them with pysanky and rushnyky . Blue-and-yellow Ukrainian flags were also added to the baskets this year to represent solidarity against russia’s unjust and unprovoked war on Ukraine. The ladies carefully prepared a list of people who would receive their treats and delivered the baskets to 31 Soyuzianky in time for Easter. Before the baskets were distributed, the food was blessed by Bishop Andriy Rabiy, pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church, which is near the UECC. Many recipients of the baskets were deeply moved by the generosity and kindness shown by our Soyuzianky. Vera Jaryi commented, “The look in their eyes made this annual tradition of 'Sharing Our Love' well worth it."
