27 НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ • Липень-Cерпень 2022 Excerpts from the Gareth Jones diaries were read by Julian Lewis Davis, an actor in Ag - nieszka Holland’s powerful 2020 film Mr. Jones , which was written by Ukrainian Amer - ican Andrea Chalupa. (More information about the film, and about the digitization of the Gareth Jones diaries, can be found in the November 2020 issue of this magazine, which is available online at unwla.org, under the Publications tab.) Various members of Gareth Jones’s fam - ily attended the event, including his two great-nephews, Richard and Phillip Colley, as well as Richard’s wife and the late Nigel Colley’s former wife, Jane. Digitization of the diaries was a significant undertaking by the UNWLA, and one of the organization’s most important education - al projects of recent years. The project was first proposed to a small group of Soyuzianky by Professor Luciuk in 2018. The idea was to make the diaries readily available to the pub - lic and to ensure that the Holodomor was accurately documented and never forgotten. The project was presented to the UNWLA ex - ecutive committee in November 2019. Thanks to the vision of then President Marianna Za - jac and the entire executive committee, who voted unanimously to approve the digitization, the project moved forward. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed in December 2019, with the UNWLA becoming the principal sponsor. The project was to be completed, and its completion celebrated, in May 2020. As a re - sult of Covid restrictions, however, the proj- ect could not be completed until late 2021. Further Covid breakouts delayed the actual commemoration to May 2022. I was honored to be the UNWLA liaison for the project and grateful to UNWLA Presi - dent Natalie Pawlenko for the opportunity to represent the organization at the event in Cardiff, Wales. Attending the commemora - tion was the culmination of over two years of interaction with representatives from the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth. It was wonderful to finally meet Rob Phillips Speakers at the event in the Welsh Parliament (l-r): Rob Phillips, head of the Archives department at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth; Oksana Lodziuk Krywulych, UNWLA Officer-at- Large and liaison for the digitization of the diaries; Professor Lubo - myr Luciuk of the Royal Military College of Canada. Phillip Colley at the final resting place of his great-uncle Gareth Jones. Continues on page 29
