15 НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ • Липень-Cерпень 2022 On a sunny weekend this past April, Central Park West was lined with richly decorated floats as samurai led a celebratory column of the Japan Day Parade past Central Park. Among the extravaganza of traditional Japanese costumes and modern popular culture, one of the groups carried a sizeable Ukrainian flag and the UNWLA logo. The Japan Parade was organized by the Consulate of Japan in New York to mark the 150th anniversary of the visit of the Japanese mission to the U.S. in 1872, which resulted in the development of Japan-U.S. rela - tions, including the establishment of the Consulate in New York. The organizers, mindful of the situation in Ukraine, invited the UNWLA to take part in the parade, thereby showing support for the Ukrainian people fighting russian aggression. UNWLA President Natalie Pawlenko shared the festival stage with the Grand Marshal, Star Trek actor George Takei, and Ambassador Mikio Mori, among others. In her brief speech, she thanked the Japanese communi - ty in New York and the Japanese Consulate for showing solidarity with Ukraine. “We are grateful to the coun - try of Japan for providing support to Ukraine in the early days of the war. And it is vital that we continue to shine a light on the unspeakable tragedy unfolding daily in Ukraine, affecting millions of innocent people who want nothing more than to live a peaceful life,” she stated. The marchers in the UNWLA group, Soyuzianky from New Jersey and New York, were greeted with much cheering and shouts of Slava Ukraini! from enthusi - astic bystanders, many of whom vigorously waved Ukrainian flags. The parade included a block-long line of vendors and a Charity Tent. The UNWLA was grate - ful to have been chosen as the recipient of the funds collected at the Charity Tent during the parade. Just as we appreciate our own culture and community, it is equally important to support the communities and cultures around us. Not only does this promote mutual cultural understanding and stronger partnership ties, it also contributes to a positive image of our culture abroad. UNWLA participants in the Japan Day Parade.
