10 OUR LIFE • July-August 2022 Since June 5, southeast Florida has become more united in supporting Ukraine as it defends its freedom. On that Sunday afternoon, the Uniting for Ukraine event attracted some 300 guests to the festively decorated Hellenic Cultural Center at St. Catherine’s Greek Orthodox Church in West Palm Beach. Guests enjoyed a concert, great food, and beautiful crafts while learning more about Ukraine and its culture, and even about the UNWLA and its work in supporting Ukraine. Member-at-Large Nadia Kachalenko organized the event with the help of some amazing volunteers from various ethnicities who in just two weeks managed to develop a program, find sponsors and performers, cook the food, organize the arts and crafts fair, and decorate the venue. On Sunday, April 10, Pokrova Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Houston sponsored a Ukrainian Easter Bake Sale and Bazaar, where crafts and a Ukrainian lunch were sold. The line for the delicious food stretched out the door of the parish hall, and the food sold out quickly. Evgenia Balaban and Maria Zhuk baked 75 pasky that also sold very quickly. A fabulous variety of Ukrainian tortes and pastries had been baked and were enjoyed by everyone. Branch 118 participated in the Bazaar as one of several vendors selling Ukrainian crafts and pysanka supplies. Branch members Juliana Villacorta, Christine Villacorta, and Chrystia Bryndzia manned the booth and sold $450 in goods, which we donated to the UNWLA’s Humanitarian Aid fund for Ukraine. Additionally, Branch 118 sponsored a pysanka -making contest, organized by branch treasurer Martha Noukas. A wonderful display of pysanky , posters, and instructions was set out for those interested in learning to make pysanky and competing in the contest. In two short hours, the contest was concluded, and the $25 prize for the best pysanka went to Elizabeth Quita, a 13-year-old student from Sugar Land Middle School. Congratulations, Elizabeth! Martha Noukas , Treasurer, Branch 118, Houston, TX The tour also included a large plant sale. Branch Vice-President Halyna Lojko and Mr. Mischenko worked in concert to ensure a wide variety of plants for sale at the event. Ms. Lojko visited numerous local nurseries that provided plants, while Mr. Mischenko cultivated and donated native plants for sale. His much-coveted horseradish plants sold out immediately! Strolling in the garden, attendees could purchase hand-made Ukrainian crafts or try their luck at a raffle of lovely themed gift baskets. The highly successful event raised $10,217.98! Branch 98 is grateful to all our supporters who so graciously contributed to help the citizens of Ukraine at this time of crisis.
