4 OUR LIFE • January-February 2022 UNWLA Welcomes New Officer-at-Large / СУА вітає нову вільну членкиню Letters Thank you for printing the letters you ran in the December 2021 issue. My husband and I agree with all those who wrote to complain about the substitution of the letter X for the letter H in Ukrainian. (When we were still able to travel to Ukraine, another pet peeve was hearing “сурпріз” substituted for the perfectly useful Ukrainian word “несподіванка.”) Hopefully the OL/НЖ editors could work with authors in the future to ensure that their articles do not use such borrowings from English when a current Ukrainian word exists. Among the letter writers, Irena Pyskir-Bilak criticized the cover design and colors of the October 2021 issue for being too bizarre, gaudy, and not reflective of the talents of Iryna Senyk, whose memory was being celebrated. I have to agree. Perhaps the design staff was not familiar enough with Ms. Senyk’s work to embody more of her style. Regarding the inside of the magazine, the photography has been a huge improvement – no more muddy, out- of-focus black-and-white photos. I also think the graphics and typefaces are very attractive. It’s basically the covers that seem to me to be very commercial – like those of a publication that has to compete with others on a magazine rack in a supermarket. Our Life/Наше життя shouldn’t have to do that. Natalie Mason Gawdiak Member-at-Large, Columbia, MD Editor’s note: The cover of the October 2021 issue, as stated in its description, was a photograph of the Iryna Senyk Mural in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine, by Ukrainian mural artists Yuriy Pitchuk and Marta Pitchuk, who have created some 40 murals over the past eight years in various cities in Ukraine. Art is very subjective, and it is therefore not surprising that some readers appreciated the mural while others did not. Born in Ivano-Frankivsk, Tatyana immigrated to the U.S. in 2003. She has an MBA from the Rochester Institute of Technology Saunders College of Business, a Master of Science in Medical Management from the University of Rochester Simon Graduate School of Business, and a Master of Science from the University of Rochester School of Nursing. She has served as the Director of Rochester Regional Health after previously working as a Nurse Practitioner in the Heart Transplant and Cardiac Surgery Division of the University of Rochester Medical Center. She now practices medicine in her own private clinic. Tatyana is an active member of the UNWLA. She is currently the President of Branch 120 in Rochester and regularly reports on the branch’s activities. Tatyana is married and has one daughter. She enjoys traveling, gardening, and preparing tasty meals. Тетяна Тимків народилася в Україні на Івано-Франківщині та еміґрувала до США у 2003 р. За роки проживання в США здобула три вищі освіти.
