Our Life | Наше життя May | Травень 2021 24 are significantly more females than males in the 65+ age group. What is surprising is the much larger num - ber of females than males among children under five years of age. About 4,800 (17%) of Ukrainian females in Phil - adelphia aged 5+ speak Ukrainian at home, and more than half of them are recent immigrants from Ukraine. Women aged 18–24 have a much higher percentage of Ukrainian speakers than the other age groups because 82% of them are recent immigrants from Ukraine. The numbers of women who speak Ukrainian in different age groups provide the basis for potential active members in various types of or - ganizations. The proportions of Ukrainian speakers are a reality check on the status of the Ukrainian lan - guage, and on what should or could be done. Dr. Oleh Wolowyna was born in Lviv, Ukraine, and grew up in Argentina. He has a Licenciado degree in Mathe - matics from the National University of Buenos Aires, a Masters in Sociology and Statistics from the University of Florida in Gainesville, and a Ph.D. in Demography from Brown University, and he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He has taught at the Universities of Florida, Western Ontario, and North Caro - lina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Wolowyna is a Fellow at the Center for Slavic, Eur - asian and Eastern European Studies at the University of North Carolina and a two-time recipient of a Fulbright Scholar grant. He is working on the demography of the 1932–1933 Famine in Ukraine and Russia with a team of demographers at the Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Dr. Wolowyna is a full member of the Shevchenko Scien - tific Society and the founder and Director of its Center for Demographic and Socioeconomic Research on Ukraini - ans in the United States. His latest publication is Atlas of Ukrainians in the U.S . He is also one of the co-founders of the Ukrainian Association of North Carolina and currently serves as its Vice-President. Matchmaking by the Numbers Who said that statistics are boring? Many young Ukrainian women know that it is not easy to find a nice young Ukrainian man. Maybe statistics can help ... If you are a single female aged 25–29, for exam - ple, which cities will increase your chances of meeting a single Ukrainian man in the same age group? The metropolitan area of Bridgeport– Stamford in Connecticut is at the top of the list. It has 178 males and only 22 females in this age group – that is, for every young woman, there are eight potential male candidates. The odds in the next city, Baltimore in Maryland, are much lower, with 432 males and 125 females, or 3.5 males for every female. The cities with about three males for every female are Miami–Fort Lauderdale in Florida, Austin, TX, San Jose, CA, and Denver, CO. Cities to avoid: Providence, RI, Kansas City, MO, and Jacksonville, FL. The number of single Ukrainian women aged 25–29 in these cities is about ten times the number of men in that age group. One way of increasing your chances is to marry young and raise your potential husband's age span. Let’s say, for example, that you are in the 20–24 age group and are willing to consider men aged 20–29. In Indianapolis, IN there are only 22 women aged 20–24 but 714 men aged 20–29 – that is, there are 27 men available for every woman. In three cities, there are about 20 men for every woman with these character - istics: Cincinnati, OH, Louisville, KY, and Milwau - kee, WI. If you speak Ukrainian at home and want a partner who also speaks Ukrainian, try Portland in Oregon, with three times as many Ukrain - ian-speaking men as women aged 25–29. Seattle in Washington State and Sacramento in California have 2.5 times more men than women in the same age group. Another good bet is Atlanta, GA, with twice as many Ukraini - an-speaking men than women. Disclaimer: Before you decide to move, be warned that we offer no guarantees. These are statistical averages. On the other hand, you never know ...
