Available data allows us to analyze the reasons for these extreme variations in the proportions of females and males. We can analyze their age, marital status, education, and occupation, and whether they are U.S.-born or part of the so- called Fourth Wave ( Четверта Хвиля ). Females Who Speak Ukrainian at Home Only 16% (90,500) of all females aged 5+ speak Ukrainian at home. The percentage of Ukraini - an-speaking females varies from zero in four states to 45% in South Dakota. Other states with high percentages of females who speak Ukrain - ian at home are Kentucky, Washington, Illinois, and Kansas. Among cities with at least 1,000 Ukrainian fe - males, none of the 1,031 Ukrainian females in Harrisburg-Carlisle, PA speak Ukrainian. On the other hand, 43% of all females in Springfield, MA, Seattle, WA, and Sacramento, CA speak Ukrainian. These cities have a high proportion of recent immigrants from Ukraine, the so-called Fourth Wave. In general, the percentage of Ukrainian speakers in a city correlates with the percentage of new immigrants from Ukraine. Among cities with large numbers of Ukrainian females, the percentages speaking Ukrainian are 33% in Chicago, 31% in Cleveland, 17% in Phila - delphia, 14% in New York, and 3% in Pittsburgh. The low percentage of Ukrainian-speaking fe - males in Pittsburgh is due to the relatively small number of Fourth Wave immigrants in that city. The influx of immigrants from Ukraine over the past years has increased the number of Ukrainian speakers in the U.S. and stopped, at least for a while, the process of language assimilation. A detailed analysis of this effect can be found in the Atlas of Ukrainians in the U.S . Example: Ukrainian Women in Philadelphia There were 30,000 Ukrainian females in Philadelphia in 2018, 4% more than males (see table).
