Our Life | Наше життя May | Травень 2021 22 Geographical Distribution and Proportion of Females over Males Ukrainian women can be found in every state of the Union and the District of Columbia, but their distri - bution is very uneven (see map), with numbers var - ying from 446 in Wyoming to 87,590 in New York. They are concentrated mainly on the East and West Coasts; very few live in the North Central states. In 38 of the 50 states, there are more females than males. Some states have a very high proportion of females, while others have a very high proportion of males. For example, there are 446 females in Wyoming and only 131 males – i.e., about three times more fe - males than males. Vermont has twice as many females as males. Among the states with more than 10,000 fe - males, only Texas has more males than females. Seven states have significantly more males than females. The two extreme examples are South Dakota and Arkan - sas; less than 40% of Ukrainians in each of these states are females. The differences in the proportions of females and males are more pronounced in cities. Grand Junction, CO and Jackson, MI have 13 times more females than males, and in Bend-Redmond, OR this factor is ten. Among the 13 cities with more than 10,000 females, only one city, Sacramento in California, has slightly more males than females. In all these cities the num - ber of females is between 1% and 20% higher than the number of males. Six cities have no Ukrainian fe - males at all – only Ukrainian males – but the number of males in each of these cities is under 100. DEMOGRAPHICS Dr. Oleh Wolowyna UKRAINIAN How many women of Ukrainian ancestry are there in the U.S.? Where do they live? What percentage of them speak Ukrainian? How do their numbers compare to the numbers of Ukrainian men? These and many other questions about Ukraini - an American demographics are being answered by the Center for Demographic and Socioeco - nomic Research of Ukrainians in the U.S. at the Shevchenko Scientific Society. The Center has developed an extensive database with detailed data on Ukrainians in the U.S. drawn from official U.S. sources: the census, the American Commu - nity Survey, and immigration statistics. Most of the data is disaggregated by gender and available separately for males and females. Some tables by gender are on the Center’s website, http:// www.inform-decisions.com/stat. The recently published Atlas of Ukrainians in the U.S., avail - able at Amazon and on the Society’s website, http://shevchenko.org/books/atlas-of-ukraini - ans-in-the-united-states-demographic-and-so - cio-economic-characteristics/ , has detailed maps with data by gender. Let’s begin with some basic information on wom - en of Ukrainian ancestry in the U.S. As of 2018, the total number of Ukrainians in private house - holds in the U.S. (which excludes persons living in group quarters like prisons, mental institutions, monasteries, etc.) was 1,111,000. There were 576,000 females and 535,000 males, or 8% more females than males.
