Our Life | Наше життя March | Березень 2021 26 Responding to the hardship created for many fellow Americans by the COVID pandemic, UNWLA for USA raised $31,410 for Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger relief charity. Feeding America distributes food to millions of people annually via food pantries, soup kitchens, youth programs, senior centers, and shelters. UNWLA FOR USA recipient, it would decrease the number of individuals who receive assistance, and the numbers who need assistance are many. In direct response to my article asking members to join the committee, Paranka Mazurek from Branch 50 in the Detroit Regional Council called me to share her interest in creating a registry of elderly women, Babusi, in the United States. This is timely as one of the resolutions of the XXXI UNWLA Convention ( Our Life , September 2017) was to assist senior members of the UNWLA. Branch 50 members Ulana Kushner, Oksana Posa, Halya Pytiak, and Daria Rothek were interested in the project and eager to work as a team. Branch President Oksana Malanchuk supported the effort. Their plans called for the creation of a database that would be open to women within and outside the UNWLA but would target women of Ukrainian descent or with Ukrainian family connections. Demographic data such as name, address, and place of birth would be recorded, but so would any noteworthy experiences, such as time spent in a displaced persons or concentration camp, or refugee status. Accomplishments, talents, and skills would be sought and, thinking ahead, might be used to feature a Babusia-of-the-Month within the pages of Our Life . Needs would be shared, perhaps creating an opportunity for a match between a Babusia with a skill and a Babusia with a need. A pilot project is currently being designed to track, monitor, and evaluate the process within the Detroit Regional Council before presentation to UNWLA branches. Ideas are already in place for fundraisers to help support elderly Babusi in need. It is projects like these that demonstrate the high level of activity and commitment of our UNWLA members. Thank you to all the members of Branch 98 and Branch 50. A special thank-you to Daniel Kashimer, whose donation of $6,000 to the Babusi Fund was distributed as directed by Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine President Oreslava Khomyk to elderly women in regions throughout Ukraine. Thank You From Feeding America
