Our Life | Наше життя June | Червень 2021 19 The Frances T. Bourne Jacaranda Public Library in Venice, FL, was the setting for an outdoor presentation on Saturday, April 24, high - lighting the many contributions of Ukrainian Americans to Sarasota County as the community celebrates its centennial. Titled “Ukrain - ian Americans in Sarasota County: History and Culture,” the event was organized by Professor Vira Bodnaruk, who chairs the Public Relations Committee of Branch 56 in North Port, FL, and Mary Lou - ise Fischer, the library’s assistant manager. Branch 56 and other Ukrainian American organizations based in North Port combined their talents to hold the event. These organ - izations are a vibrant component of Sarasota County’s community, with activities that include sponsoring scholarships, conducting community educational and cultural events, preparing and offer - ing meals to the public, supporting war-relief efforts for those in need in Ukraine since Russia’s invasion, and proactively reaching out to register community members for the Covid vaccine or ar - ranging transportation to their appointments. Prof. Bodnaruk’s committee consisted of the UNWLA, the United Ukrainian American Organizations of North Port, the Ukrainian American Veterans, the Ukrainian American Club of Southwest Florida, and the Ukrainian Language Society. Committee members Ann Marie Susla, Victor Lisnyczyj, Slava Stefanyshyn, Anna Macie - linski, Irene Copie, and Bohdana Puzyk played an active role. They led a discussion of Ukrainian American contributions to Sarasota County, held an outdoor presentation about significant Ukrainian historical events and historical figures, and distributed a color - ful and informative handout compiled and edited by Anna Ma - cielinski. The handout included photographs, provided by Victor Lisnyczyj and Prof. Bodnaruk, documenting significant community achievements over the past decades. Ann Marie Susla delivered a talk based on Prof. Bodnaruk’s pres - entation on the 40th anniversary of North Port’s Ukrainian Center (“Oseredok”). Irene Copie and Bohdana Puzyk followed with a talk focused on Ukraine’s unique and ancient art forms. Guests were then invited into the library to watch a pysanky -making demon - stration by Ms. Copie and see the Spring and Easter displays ar - ranged by another Branch 56 member, Slava Stefanyshyn. Ms. Stefanyshyn chaired a Branch 56 committee that created such displays this spring in five Sarasota County libraries, including the Jacaranda Public Library (see following story).
